It would be super helpful to colour the Sections, so that Graphs could be grouped visually by colour - unless there is currently a workaround for this for ‘Section’ bar graphs? We use this to see when workflow bottlenecks are on the rise.
I know there are previous threads that are similar, but not quite what I’m requesting. Threads in the past focus more on being able to color code TASKS. I am requesting the ability to color code SECTIONS (Having the option to change either the font color of the text section font OR the ability to color a block behind the text.) It would help with quick visibility and the ability to visualize for some brains who think in color. Thank you for considering.
Welcome, @Hannah_Puz-Kim,
Don’t forget to click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the Vote button; that’s the quickest and most effective way to express your support for a request.
But is there any chance you missed this English Forum > Product Feedback request which I feel is the same as yours:
May I merge your request into that? Your vote will be maintained.
Thanks,
Larry
Hello Larry,
Thank you for the kind welcome. I specifically didn’t want it to be the same topic as the one you suggested to merge with because, despite the title, it states “color code tasks” whereas I’m asking to color code Sections. I felt the distinction was important.
Thank you!

Hey,
I understood your requirement completely.
Right now, there is no functionality in Asana to have colored fonts.
However, you can use the Color Palette emoji ( Color Pallete Emoji) and copy-paste it before the section name. This will help you visually differentiate the sections, and it will look like this..

Arun
Hello Arun,
That will be a sufficient temporary workaround until (hopefully) Asana decides to add the feature.
Thank you for your kind assistance!

Hi @Hannah_Puz-Kim, instead of using Sections, if you Group your Board view by a single-select field or multi-select field which has coloured options, or even better Grouped by a Task type (also with coloured options) then those colours will reflect in the entire board column.
Make sure to click on Options in the top right area, then Layout options and switch on Color board columns. ![]()
Hello Richard,
Thank you for your kind response and suggestions.
I’m not sure the method you listed achieves my need within Asana, but it also could be that I am not understanding correctly, so please let me know! I am needing the portions circled in red, in the screenshots below, to be color coded one way or another. As of now I’m utilizing Arun’s suggestion because it is the closest solution I’ve seen to match my need. I’m also much better at utilizing data that’s been organized in the List view vs. Board view.
I am always open to hearing different options, so thank you again!

Hi @Hannah_Puz-Kim , this is what I meant, something like this:
Doesn’t that look pretty?
In your case, judging from your section names, I would suggest you use a single-select field, rather than use a task type (which is better for stages/statuses).
So you would need to create a single-select field and call it ‘Category’ for example, and recreate your sections as the field’s options. Then apply a value of the ‘Category’ field to all your tasks and then Group by that.
Here is an in-depth guide on how you can achieve this:
Hello Again Richard,
Thank you very much for the detailed guidance. While this will definitely be useful for many of my future tasks where my intent is to view based on status, many of my other projects require me to view them in list view; section by section. Is there a way to achieve this in a similar manner so that it gets laid out as you showed in the first image?
Thank you for your time and assistance!

Hannah Puz-Kim
Hi Hannah,
Yes, in the list view, your Groups would look like this:
Does that answer your original request? ![]()
Hello Richard,
Thank you again for your kind assistance. While this is a sufficient solution for the time being, I would consider it a temporary workaround. The necessity of needing to create a custom field for each section in order to color code without being able to utilize the actual “section” column+rows to do so, leaves it feeling a bit dissatisfactory and wanting for more. I do hope that in the future Asana considers the capabilities of color coding Sections in and of themselves.
I do truly appreciate your kind assistance with this matter and have implemented the techniques for my current projects. Have a wonderful week!
Regards,
Hannah Puz-Kim
Hi @Hannah_Puz-Kim , glad you are implementing these techniques.
I also found this thread and the good news it is marked in-development so this is likely coming soon to Sections. I’ll merge our thread into this one so the votes are consolidated:
