Change project owner when person left

All,
I want to change a project owner of a project (he left the organization), but I’m not able to do this.

I checked: https://help.asana.com/s/article/project-owner-and-members

But this is not working for me. I’m a Super Admin, but not able to do this. Any suggestions?

Hey @Niels_Oomen if the project owner is no longer part of the organization and deactivated in Asana, you should be able to click the Share button on the project and claim the admin role for yourself.

Thanks for the feedback. But it means that we first need to deactivate that person. Is there no other option. Just by changing the Project Owner. If I cannot do that as a Super Admin, what does a Super Admin means in that case.

The strange thing is that for some projects I was able to change the Project Owner (same person) and for other projects I was not.

Hello, this did not work. I deactivated the Project Owner and assigned a new person, but that person is now not assigned a Project Owner, but I also cannot assign a project owner. Now the project does not have a Project Owner at all.

Any thoughts

Hi @Niels_Oomen it sounds like you haven’t followed @neonrain.club 's sounds advice. You need to click into the project’s Share button and find a ‘become Project Admin’ button to claim it and then you can make the other person a project owner. This button only appears once the previous Project Admin is deprovisioned from Asana.

You need to be a Project Admin in order to change the Project owner, either in the Project settings or in a Portfolio list view.

Additionally if you are on Enterprise, you could also use Work access mode (from the Admin Console) to join objects and then to change permissions.

I reached out to Asana Support, it is a waste of time doing this. Just to change the project owner of a project when a person left the company.

Well, neither of us mentioned you should reach out to support and waste your time.
We’re just trying to help you. :person_shrugging:

If the person is deprovisioned correctly, you should not require Asana support anymore, as the button to ‘Become Project Admin’ should appear in the Share button popup menu, as I mentioned.

I reached out to Support and they provided the solution I was looking for.

As Super Admin you can launch Asana (via the Admin Console) in Work Access Mode to gain temporary visibility into any project in the organization, including private ones.

This allowed me to assign a Project Owner.

Yes, I also mentioned that above, perhaps ypu missed it
Glad you solved your issue!
