Automation Rule Not Working for Form-Submitted Tasks

Hi Asana Community,

We are having trouble with a simple automation rule in Asana and would appreciate any insights or suggestions.

What We Are Trying to Do

  • Automation Rule:
  • When a task is moved to [Section], it is Added to [Project] .

The Issue

  • The rule triggers when a task is moved to the relevant section.
  • The rule log shows “Success” for these actions.
  • However, the action (adding the task to the project) does not actually occur for certain tasks.
  • There are no error messages in the task log.
  • We can manually move these tasks to the project without any issues.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken

  • Tested the rule with manually created tasks—works as expected.
  • Created several test tasks—all triggered and completed the rule successfully.
  • The only difference with the tasks that don’t work: they are created via a form submission.

Our Questions

  1. Are tasks created by form submissions treated differently by Asana automations?
  2. Is there a known limitation or setting that would prevent automations from reassigning or moving form-submitted tasks?
  3. Are there any additional permissions or configurations I should check?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

Rules should run as expected on form-created tasks. Could you screenshot (hide private data) your rule? Additionally, could you go to one of those tasks that the rule unsuccessfully ran on and check the “All Activity” area at the bottom (where comments are) to see if there’s any context for what happened? You should see a little lightning bolt next to any rule action applied to the task.

I can’t replicate this issue in my environment; does this problem exist for all forms/projects for you? you could try creating a dummy form that adds tasks to the same section as your real one just to confirm.
