Autoforwarding a previously forwarded email does not create a task

Hi all,

I am using the email forwarding functionality to successfully create tasks in Asana from my work Microsoft Outlook Windows application.

I’d also like to add personal tasks to my Asana workspace from my personal Gmail account but Asana only handles emails from my work email address.

To overcome this limitation I’ve created an rule in my work Outlook application which auto-forwards any emails received from my personal email address to x@mail.asana.com.

Gmail (personal email) > Outlook (work email) > Asana (listening for work emails)

For some reason this doesn’t work - I can see the auto-forwarded email in the sent folder on Outlook but no task is created in Asana.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is not working?

Thanks,

Michael

There is a chance that the second forward will indeed keep the initial sender as the actual sender. I am not an expert about email, @Phil_Seeman maybe you are?

It’s difficult to know exactly how Asana processes the incoming email, but it’s possible there are elements of the message’s header information that are different when coming initially from Gmail than from Outlook, which throw them off.

You’re using the “forward” rule action in Outlook, not “redirect”, right?

If you wanted to diagnose it further, what I might do is forward a regular Outlook email and a Gmail-originated email to some other email inbox, then examine the headers of both and see what differences you see. Of course, that may not matter since you have a very limited ability to control a message’s header.

Or, you might just need to file a support ticket with Asana and ask them about it.

Note: I also found this forum thread; it’s not your exact scenario but might be relevant:
