Alt Text on Images

How do I add Alt Text to images uploaded in Asana so that my Blind Coworker has an image description?

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us @Sam_Gould! As of now, Asana does not support adding alt text directly to images uploaded to tasks or comments. However, there are some workarounds you can use to ensure your coworker gets the information:

Add the image description in a comment or task description.

  • Example:
“Image: Screenshot of the Q2 roadmap with milestones labeled by color. The green boxes indicate completed items, while the yellow ones are in progress.”

Use a shared document like Google Docs with images and alt text.

  • If you frequently use images in your workflow, consider linking to a document where alt text can be added natively.
  • Mention in the Asana task: See this Google Docfor accessible versions of all visual assets.

Just voted and encourage others to as well (using the Vote button near the title)! This feels like a pretty notable accessibility gap, so hopefully Asana will consider it.

Agree!!

@Sam_Gould, and others with an interest in Accessibility in Asana:

Just fyi, I learned that you can submit feedback and questions on the accessibility of Asana here: Accessibility Questions & Feedback

Asana continues to expand their Accessibility coverage, and hearing about gaps from customers helps them prioritize.

Thanks,

Larry

Thank you @Sam_Gould for flagging this product gap! I’m a Group PM Lead here at Asana and I just nudged our Accessibility PM again on this. This is a feature I personally feel passionate about and we do have it in our backlog! But given our 3+ year effort to continue to remediate more and more of our product to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards, we just haven’t gotten to it yet.

Also, thank you @lpb for sharing our a11y feedback link! We have automated tests that check for a11y conformance on remediated surfaces, we do frequent manual a11y audits, and we run frequent UXR sessions with Fable - but also acknowledge there is always room for improvement. We’ve made a11y a part of our product development ethos here at Asana so we take pride in living up to our commitment to make Asana inclusive and accessible to all. @Sam_Gould please share our A11y Feedback Link with your coworker!
