Adding teammates to work, AI Teammates as collaborators not allowed?

Hello!

Very excited about AI Teammates! I’ve been testing several use cases and really love pulling teammates into a task with a simple @-mention. However, there have been a few times when I hoped my teammate could act even more autonomously, as in joining a task without being directly assigned or requiring an @-mention from a human colleague to get started.

What I’ve noticed is that the Teammates functionality includes the ability to @-mention human teammates, however those mentions do not add the user as a collaborator to the task- thereby not actually notifying the human teammate. Additionally, I am not able to use automations to add the AI Teammate to tasks as a collaborator- they are not searchable as people in the “Add collaborators” action in the rule builder.

I thought I’d take a different angle to accommodate, so I instead changed the action to comment on a task and @-mention the teammate from within the task comments- however this also did not actually add them as a collaborator.

Do you all work with teammates in this fashion? How do you initiate work for teammates without creating a unique task just for them or inserting yourself in other tasks and calling the teammate to join?

Thanks for sharing your experience. You’re right! AI Teammates can be @-mentioned, but this doesn’t add them as collaborators or trigger notifications, and they can’t be added via automation rules yet. For now, manually adding your teammates as collaborators is the best way to ensure they receive notifications, even if it’s an extra step to keep everyone in the loop. Additionally, while comments alone won’t add collaborators, you can strategically use them to summarize important updates or tag teammates for visibility, creating a habit of mentioning key updates in comments.
A helpful workaround is to create a rule that adds a subtask, like “AI Teammate review,” and assign it to the AI or human teammate. This kicks off their part without changing the parent task’s assignee.
