Add native “Attach URL” to tasks

Problem:

Links pasted in descriptions/comments get buried, are slow to click (you have to wait for the link card to expand) and aren’t first-class attachments.

This is frustrating for workflows that rely on files hosted on remote servers, or on URLs for context.

Workarounds exist (custom field) but are clumsy, restricted to single links, and make the links harder to read.

A native solution would be more secure, elegant, and expand asana use-cases.

Solution:

Allow links to be added as attachments to tasks. Single click to open.

Proposed Behaviour:

  • Paperclip menu → URL
  • Fields: URL (https://) Link text (optional)
  • Creates an attachment tile with a globe/link icon
  • Shows URL under tile (cut off at max char), full link on hover
  • Single click opens the URL
  • Counts as an attachment for search/filters/columns/reporting.

Hi, @conig2,

Not to distract from your feature request, but you can keep comments from getting buried by pinning them to the top. Once a comment is posted, hover over it with your cursor and select the ellipsis (three dots).

From there, choose “Pin to top.”

Hi @conig2 , welcome to the forum :waving_hand:

What you describe sounds like what the native integrations do, kinda like the Google Drive app, for instance, no?

Is there a specific tool you are looking for such support?

Yes, but the current integrations all require linked applications with permissions. That’s great if you’re using one of the integrations, and have the ability to enable asana’s permissions to access those platforms. However, if you want any other domain, or permission set-up you need to use workarounds. TPeople often create custom fields for URLs. But this limits you to attaching only one URL and the UI is janky.

You can also throw URLs in notes. But then you have to hover, wait for a card to appear, and then click the link. Having an attachment class for arbitrary URLs would greatly improve my workflow.
