Ability to see Multiple Levels of Subtasks in List View or Gantt view

Is there a way to see multiple levels of subtasks in list view beyond the two or three available?

Task 1.0.0.0.0
Subtask 1.1.0.0.0
Subtask 1.1.1.0.0
Subtask 1.1.1.1.0
Subtask 1.1.1.1.1

Thanks

Andy

Hi Asana team, I am trying to do the same as Andy!

Was this feature ever reviewed? This would be very handy for more complex projects that require a few layers of nesting subtasks.

Hi everyone, I have moved this old thread into the English Forum > Product Feedback category so you can all vote on it - I did!

Hi @Richard_Sather @Ipb

Was this ever implemented ? Currently in the timeline I am only able to display “Subtask 1” , while “Subtask 2” & “Subtask 3” are not visible.

Thanks

Hi @Dario11 , welcome to the forum :waving_hand:
What you report is strange - not sure it is related to this issue which I’m not sure it was implemented as I don’t really use the Timeline view - more a fan of the Gantt view where this issue isn’t applicable.

Could you provide some screenshots? Are you sure Subtask 2 & 3 have due dates? If not, then it makes sense for them to not show up in the Timeline view.

Hi Richard - thanks a lot for the prompt reply !

Hopefully you are right, and it is just me missing some trivial.
The behavior is the same in both Timeline and Gantt’s. Since you are more familiar with Gantt view, I’ll use that one.
Ill split my reply in 3 posts, since apparently I can only attach one picture at the time

I’ve created a new Section, added “Task A” and few levels of subsequent :Subtasks"
Task A
|–> SubTask 1
| → SubTask 2
|–> SubTask 3

I assigned an owner to all of them , a start date and a due date.

First - in the List view, you can see that Subtask1 has an indication of containing further subtasks next to it. However there is no arrow option to expand.

Second - On the Gantt view we have the same problematic: no arrow to expand and no extra bars being displayed

From the details of Subtask1 , you can see at the bottom that SubTask 2 exists. Further, Subtask2 as well has the indication of containing other subtasks. Which in turn are also not displayed

My conclusion is that while Asana allows you to add several levels of Subtasks only the first level will be displayed in Lists, Timelines and Gantt’s view

Hope it clarifies - looking forward to get your advice

Hi @Dario11 , your conclusion is correct.
Thanks for the screenshots - from your initial description it sounded like your three subtasks were at the same level. Had you mentioned sub-subtask and sub-sub-subtask, I would have understood

You can actually go 5 levels down into subtasks but, personally for me, beyond 1 level of subtasks, you start encroaching into the ‘quantum realm’ - be careful as work can get lost and users may find it hard to navigate!

Hi Richard,

The editor messed with the spacing in the original post.
I have nested substaks, or as you described “Sub-subtask and sub-sub-subtask”

Yup, the new forum design has been playing tricks on all of us

Hi Ricard, Thanks a lot !
Are you aware of any plans to expand support and visualize Subtasks at lower levels?
Other solutions in the market do provide such capability ..
On full disclosure, I’m getting push back from some our of our PMs : "How come I can add the Subtasks_x but I cannot visualize them? "

Hey @Dario11 , my honest response would be “this is not MS Project - sub-subsubtasks is not a good idea”. I understand they may not like that response but trust me, it will not work. You can find other ways of categorizing a project by using Sections and optionally, Subsections using the Group button.

There is also this suggestion from @lpb.

However, I think there might be plans for Asana to add expansion for a further level of subtasks to be viewed in the Gantt view or List view - can’t be certain though as they do not make their roadmap entirely public, unless you join the Ambassador program where you will get early previews of upcoming features and live webinars and events.

Btw, I have moved our discussion into this existing thread where you and others can vote on (scroll to the top, click on the Vote button, top left), since it was not quite related to the previous thread you initially posted on.

Thanks a lot Richard -
Getting to the bottom of it, actually does helps. We needed to understand whether this was bug or by design. Appreciate the timely feedback.
Ill be checking the suggestion by Ipb you are referring here.
