When editing template... cant add a new task via task template?

Find this super annoying that when editing a template you cant add a new task item via a task template that lives inside that template…

Seems so unconnected…

So the workaround is actually to have “live projects” that are the real templates? They seem more functional as templates than the actual templates :joy:

I totally agree! I have to keep live projects open too to make sure that we’re able to add subtasks directly to other sections of the project.

This remains an issue I’d like to see Asana improve upon. I built out a suggestion that asks for something similar but there was an interesting discussion of work-arounds in my thread. See here:

@Brandon_Scheirman and @FenwayJohnny,

Isn’t this topic and the one Brandon created and linked above one in the same? Would it be ok with both of you if I merged the newer one into the older one (or vice versa, as you prefer)? Votes will automatically transfer.

Thanks,

Larry

Thanks Larry, I was hoping we could merge the two. Doesn’t matter to me which one is merged into which, but agree we should condense.

I have a project template that has a few Task Templates associated with it. I have on a couple occasions needed to adjust my project template by adding tasks. I want to be able to use the task template (which is already in the project template, visible in the Customize menu) to create those new tasks instead of needing to recreate the task manually.

Most of these task templates are complex and contain subtasks, pre-assignments, and custom field data. It’s laborious to create all that again from scratch.

As a workaround, could you consider creating a project from your template, and then make the changes you need in that project (allowing you to utilize your task templates) - THEN resave the project as a new template?

Understandably it’s not a perfect solution versus having access to using your task templates within the project template workflow, but hopefully this works as an intermediate solution!

Hey Matt,

That’s definitely a work-around in the short term and something I’m aware of, but I’m not satisfied as a long-term solution to this gap in functionality. To use the work-around to add even a single task via task template to an existing project template, that would mean:

  • Creating an extra project, then adding the task template
  • Converting the extra project to a new template
  • Deleting the old template
  • Resetting all the customizations in the new project template, such as removing collaborators and setting relative due dates again
  • Re-establishing template access
  • Adding the new template to appropriate portfolios
  • Fixing any rules in other projects that pointed to the old project template

etc. etc. etc.

It’s easier to just build my task from scratch in the original project template than do the work-around.

Thanks, @Brandon_Scheirman, and looks like it has been merged a Forum Team member!
