Is there a way to see the milestones on a Goal without drilling down into the connected project(s)?
It seems like this was an oversight when implementing the connection between milestones and goal progress. They should be visible as equivalents to sub-goals.
Not currently possible, as you’ve seen.
If you hadn’t already considered it, you could add all connected projects to one or more portfolios, change the portfolio column from Task progress to Milestones, and then you can hover and see all milestones across all projects that way.
Another workaround is multi-homing in a separate project(s) the milestones across goal(s) and connected projects.
Note: Not a solution but marked as such to elevate a key reply

Thanks Larry.
It’s good to at least have confirmation that I’m not missing something.
Also appreciate the suggested work-arounds.

To be clear, are you suggesting using Portfolios instead of Goals, or in addition to?
We’ve been talking as a team about doing that. It feels like the Goals implementation is still “in development,” and using Portfolios might for the time being be a more flexible solution.
That said, I tested what you suggested and it’s also not “perfect,” as you still can’t see all the milestones at once without drilling into the Project itself.
Another workaround is multi-homing in a separate project(s) the milestones across goal(s) and connected projects.
I suppose multi-homing the Milestones in a Project called “Goals”, with each Goal as a section and the Milestones nested in the sections could work, but then the Goal itself would only be a section header, it wouldn’t be an item we could add comments or status updates to. So also not fully functional.
It feels like currently there are several ways to implement goal tracking, each with some pros but also some functionality missing. No single implementation that covers all the bases.
I was suggesting Portfolios in addition to Goals, but as the rest of your post indicates, you could consider approaches that don’t actually use the Goals feature as well.
Just in case you missed it, in a portfolio project row, you can click in either the Status or the Milestones cell to display a popup project summary, which includes the list of all milestones in the project, their completion statuses, and due dates.
For the approach of using a project to contain goals, I’d recommend getting around this by making goals be tasks so you’ll have a comment thread and can use custom fields for progress, metrics, status, etc. For clients, I offer a video of this approach that even offers hierarchies not unlike Goals’ Company and Team levels.
Absolutely. Before Asana had either Portfolios or Goals, the recommended solution was projects (and I think a template may still be offered for this). When Portfolios were added, those were recommended. Now Goals are. Perhaps with Portfolios and I suggested, or the other alternatives above.
It’s not surprising that there are multiple options and that they have pros and cons. Asana tries to do almost everything for almost any organization. It’s not going to work perfectly for all. It’s just a matter of finding the best solution for you. I feel Asana is still one of the best apps to be using for all that it can do, and even when it’s not the 100% solution, the benefit of having so much of an organization’s needs met (or mostly met) with a single app outweighs the cons.
