Time Tracking not working on sub sub tasks

Hello!

Time tracking (estimated time) is not showing up in my sub sub tasks even though the field is enabled. Is time tracking in sub sub and sub sub sub tasks enabled? I don’t need times to roll up to tasks, I just want to be able to organize my projects and tasks in a granular way and enable time tracking at each level.

Thanks in advance for help

Hello @Nichole_Ventura, and welcome to the Forum!

That is a great question, and I know nested subtasks can be a bit confusing here.

Time tracking fields like Estimated time work on tasks and subtasks, but they only show where that field is actually applied. Subtasks don’t always auto‑inherit project fields at deeper levels. In most setups, the first subtask level can show project fields, while sub‑subtasks won’t show them unless you explicitly add them.

Quick ways to get Estimated time on sub‑subtasks:

  1. Add the sub‑subtask to the same project as the parent task so it inherits that project’s fields. Open the sub‑subtask, click Add to project or press Tab+P, then pick the project.

  2. My personal favourite way to avoid the issue would be to handle the tasks from the My Tasks view. As long as you are the assignee of a subtask, no matter how many layers deep that task is hidden, it will appear as a task in your My Tasks, so adding he time tracking fields and values to your My Tasks will automatically make those values visible from a project view regardless of how many layers deep the subtask is hidden.

If you’d like full inheritance across all subtask levels, that’s great feedback. I’ve shared it with our team, and you can also add your vote here so others can chime in: https://forum.asana.com/c/forum-en/product-feedback/20

I hope that helps!

Hi Joanna,

Thank you so much for the thorough and quick reply! The trick with these sub subtasks (we have the same trouble with sub sub sub tasks, if you can believe it!) Is that we want them to live nested within other tasks at the project view. I believe adding the project to the sub sub task would elevate it to the overall project view, is that right?

If we start the sub subtask outside of the project, add the project, then nest the sub sub task under the intended task and remove the project would the estimated time field stay?

Thanks again for your help!

Apologies Joanna, the second recommendation did work for us! Thank you so much for your help!
