The new people @ icon is much busier - revert to existing

People with dyslexia and autism in the team have complained that automatically including the profile picture of a person when you tag them in the description makes it more difficult for them to read a task.

Can Asana introduce a toggle to turn this off in settings?

The new way of showing people is much busier than before when tagging lots of people. Can you please revert to existing or make this an option? I don’t want to see people’s faces in the body of text.

Hi @JeremieBergeron, thanks for reaching out! This update is currently part of an experiment running for a few weeks, we really appreciate your feedback. Although we are not able to disable this update at the moment, I have gone ahead and send your comment to our product team so they can consider it as we evaluate the results of this test.

Let me know if you have any questions!

The recent Asana design updates of the people name “mention pills,” has significantly impacted the user experience, particularly in the Inbox. It’s now more challenging to quickly identify the sender of a message at a glance. Especially when multiple people mention pills are grouped together, creating a visually cluttered and confusing interface. Despite the sender’s larger profile photo and name it still falls short in terms of clarity and ease of use.

Here is an example of what I am talking about. The two names stacked up on top of one another look too busy and I see ‘Edwin’s’ name first.

We got confused a few times as well, thinking the first mentioned person was the author… otherwise, I really like the update.

These new pills are getting very much in the way of messaging. So distracting. I hope this experiment does not make it to the final product.

Hi all and thanks again for sharing your feedback with us. After further consideration and based on the positive results from the experiment, we have decided to launch this update all customers. We appreciate your feedback and we will make sure to keep it in mind as we iterate this update further in the future.

Let me know if you have any questions, I’m only a DM away!

I agree it’s just added clutter. I really find it annoying, surely there are more important updates that could be made.

Can you please revert to what you had before? Now every time someone is tagged in the comments section it shows a thumbnail of their face and adds a big grey box outline around the text. I hate to complain about a seemingly minor issue, but it really affects the legibility, especially in detailed comment sections. At the very least, please at least remove the image thumbnails of the people’s faces who are tagged. Thanks!

@Emily_Roman, is there any way for us to see the positive feedback/results that you’re referring to in this forum? Or is this more of an internal feedback from the Asana team? In my opinion, the new people mention UI has created a huge clutter in comments and inbox notifications, and it doesn’t appear that I am alone in this thread. My team is not a fan of it either.

The update that added a users profile image when they are tagged in a comment adds a lot to the visual noise when reviewing comments and feedback.

We frequently tag upwards of 5+ people in a comment for visibility, and this change in design emphasizes the tagged users much more than the content of the comment and disrupts the hierarchy of information.

One of the key things our team appreciates about Asana is the ability to streamline a lot of information and find what you need, but this design update does the opposite — making it harder to skim info and pick out the important details because your eyes are bouncing between pill shapes / images / text all densely packed together.

Would love to return to the simpler blue text, or at least have an option for how individual users or organizations would like tagged user names to appear.

@Richard_Sather Thank you! I promised I searched for an existing thread on this before posting and came up empty handed :sweat_smile: — appreciate you merging.

@Emily_Roman, this rollout continues to be a terrible experience, especially from an accessibility perspective. It’s difficult to pay attention to comment threads and inbox notifications when multiple people are mentioned in a single thread. The user mention pills are getting in the way of the message and calling for too much unnecessary attention.

An ideal solution to this would be to add an on/off switch option under the user Settings > Display > Advanced Options, such as “Hide user profile photos where users are mentioned”

Can you please share these frustrations/feedback with the team?

Positive results? Can you elaborate on how that was determined?

Asana usually tries to stay away from solutions like this, because it makes the experience different for different users, and makes the app harder to maintain.

@Bastien_Siebman I totally get that. I have been using Asana for over a decade, and that’s always been the case. However, I think my proposed solution is more of an accessibility feature, similar to the color-blind-friendly mode. I just can’t focus on the message when I see multiple bubbleheads in one single comment. It’s just insane that this has been pushed to production.

For example, take Slack. They only highlight the handle(s) mentioned in the message and do not show everyone’s profile photo, which is subtle and still noticeable.

I wish more Asana users voiced their opinion about this.

If anyone is interested in a hack, I figured out a simple solution that works for the time being. You can hide the mention pill profile photos by adding a custom CSS to your browser. It’s a hack, and I prefer not to add custom CSS, but we gotta do what’s needed when Asana won’t listen to our feedback.

  1. On Chrome, Install the ‘User JavaScript and CSS’ chrome extension. It appears to be a reliable extension with great reviews and a large user base.

  2. Go to https://app.asana.com/

  3. Click the ‘User JavaScript and CSS’ extension on the top right corner (usually, it’s hidden in the Extension menu/puzzle-looking icon) and click the plus button (New Rule), which will open up the extension JS/CSS editor.

  4. On the right pane, under the CSS editor, copy/paste the code below and click SAVE. Close the window and go back to Asana. You may need to refresh the browser, you should no longer see the profile photos when people are mentioned in task descriptions and comments.

span.WorkGraphObjectPill-iconContainer.WorkGraphObjectPill-iconContainer--domainUser {
    display: none;
}

Please note that this will only work on the browser to which you add the extension and custom CSS. If you use multiple computers and browsers, you may need to repeat this process.

The new chip style @-mentioning hierarchy is confusing to me. At a quick glance, it looks like the person @-mentioned is writing the comment, especially if they start their comment with the at mention.

Would prefer to loose the headshot in the @-mention or go back to blue links.
