At the moment, when I need to prepare any reports, I need to manually count the number of tasks that have completed. So my first question: is there a way to sum the number of completed tasks at the bottom of each section? This would be where the yellow arrow is pointing too and would display 50/100 tasks completed for example.
Secondly, is there a way to display a breakdown of the status of all tasks in a section? This would be where the red arrow is pointing and would show the number of customers in the section who have paid, cancelled, etc.
When it comes to ths custom fields, I like to create reports for this data but I am also totting this up manually. Is there a way to display a breakdown at the bottom of each section for the custom fields? So the green arrow is pointing to where there might be a breakdown of the payment method for customers. Ideally, this breakdown could be applied to all custom fields.
I am just using the standard version of Asana so maybe such features are covered in Premium perhaps? I hope I’ve provided enough detail on this but please let me know if you need anything additional to help illustrate the issue. Thanks in advance for any and all help!
Hey @Killian_Redmond, You’ve explained it really well, and I can see why you’d want those quick counts and breakdowns—it would save a lot of manual tallying!
On the free (Standard) version of Asana, unfortunately, there’s no built-in way to show a “50/100 tasks completed” counter or custom field breakdown at the bottom of each section. The total you’re seeing now (red arrow) only sums numeric fields, so it won’t automatically count tasks or group by statuses like “Paid” or “Cancelled.”
Here’s what you can do natively:
Use Advanced Search (or Reports in the left sidebar) to filter tasks by section + completion status, then save that report—this will give you a count at the top, but you’d need to run it for each section.
For custom fields, you can run a search filtering by that field (e.g., “Payment Method = Bank Transfer”) to see totals.
With Premium or higher, you get real Reporting Dashboards and Chart Widgets that can automatically:
Show counts and percentages of completed tasks per section
Break down tasks by any custom field (like Payment Method or Status) without manual counting
Filter and group by assignee, due date, etc., in one place
If you want to keep it free, you could also export your project to CSV and run quick counts in Excel/Google Sheets—takes a couple of clicks and gives you full flexibility.
With the free plan in Asana, you might find a better workaround for some of your summing needs in the column headers of Board view. Each column corresponds to a section and automatically shows the tally of tasks there.
You can continue to use your List view for your main work, but quickly flip to Board view for sums when you need them.
Note too that you can have many Board tabs (up to 50 tabs total per project) so you can create multiple tabs/view to cover your different needs. That’s because each can be filtered and grouped. So your 50/100 need could be addressed with one Incomplete tab and one Completed tab, and filter them respectively by Incomplete and Completed. Two places to look, but no manual counting.

@Killian_Redmond If, for one reason or another, the native solution does not work for you, you can alternatively use the Screenful add-on to produce the report you’re looking for. You can configure the report using a drag & drop editor, and schedule it to be sent via email or Slack daily/weekly/monthly.
