When creating first level subtasks in list view, everything is visible - however, when creating second level+ subtasks, they are not visible in list view. This creates an issue where someone can complete the subtask without realizing there are subtasks to be completed. What is the best practice here?

Actually, the feature you want is coming soon:
In the meantime, you can see if a subtask has sub-subtasks:
Subtask 1’s indicator shows in list view that it has two sub-subtasks. That only works at that level, not deeper. So in those cases it would be up to the person completing the task to look more closely by scrolling the task detail pane to see what they’re missing, if anything.
