Hi.
When applying a project tag to a task, the Custom fields are not sorted in any obvious way. this is especially clear when a task has to travel through 2 or 3 projects.
Steps to reproduce:
- make 3 projects (1-2-3)
- apply Unique custom fields to each project
- make a task in any project and tag to an other project
- go to the project and tag to the next project
- observe order
Suspicion:
the custom-fields is sorted by the created project order and not by Tag order or
project names. bus as project comes and goes - it is currently not possible to use custom fields and tag at the same time if an order is required.

HI there Asana - Any Ideas?
Hi @Jon_Jessen, welcome to the Forum and sorry for the delay. We really appreciate the detailed report. In fact, since the task is multi-homed in different projects, the custom fields appear in the order they were added to the task, and itâs not possible to change this order. Iâm sorry for any inconvenience. I can certainly understand your point and we will definitely keep this on our radar. If you donât mind, Iâm, moving your post to the Product Feedback section so that you and other users can vote for this feature. Please let me know if you need anything else!.
Hi, thanks for the replay.
i may have misunderstood youâŠbut⊠the custom fields does not appear in the order they are added to the task. If i Tag from project 1 to project 4 to project 5, they always appear 1-5-4.
I just need to know why this happens, so that i can work around it. if i need to make new projects in a special order i can work with it for now. but with 20+ users we may need a more permanent solution, as âproject comes and goesâ
Can you guide me with a work-around? we can skype or something?

Sorry for the delay, @Jon_Jessen! We were double checking this with our developers and they confirmed that the Custom Fields should be ordered based on the order of Project creation and then the order of fields within them. However, when you have multiple Projects added to a task, and Custom Fields across multiple Projects, this can get a bit confusing. At this time, we do not have a workaround for this situation, but they will keep this on their radar. Please let us know if you need anything else!
any news on this? Itâs really not UI frendly for our users because fields occur on different places many times ( when they are in more and diifferent projects)

Hi @Edwin_Rooijakkers, thanks for reaching out. The criteria for the Custom Fields sorting is still the same. Our developers are aware of this request, but we donât have an update to share yet. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Am I to assume there is still update on this piece? Would be a good thing to add to documentation and training.
This is a real issue, the custom fields are not ordered in a specific way. It would make sense to order based on when each custom field was added to a task(order of project belonging), this is not the case as @Jon_Jessen stated.
Update, issue identified and solution proposed
I tested this a little bit more. It seems like the custom fields are added to the task in the order based on when the project was created, rather than when the individual task was added to the project.
To currently control the order of how custom fields are added to a task we would need to recreate new projects in the right order and move all tasks to the new project task id, where all hyperlinks to the project would break.
What we would prefer is to be in control and be able to manage the order custom fields are visualized on a task. Instead of listing the custom fields on a task based on when the project holding the custom fields was created, it should be as @Vanessa_N stated earlier, based on in which order each task was given the custom field. We would then be able to control it by adding the task to projects in the order we want the custom field as @Jon_Jessen first stated.
As I understand this thread, this is not working as Asana team intended it to do.

Another oddity I noticed is that when I add new custom fields and drag them to the desired order in List View, they donât keep that order when I click into any Task Level view. The new custom fields get dumped at the bottom in the Task Level View. Is this appropriate behavior and is there a workaround?

Reordering using this method would be ok! But as @Brock_Taylor mentioned that does not work
Any news @Vanessa_N ?
have a good one!

Hi @Brock_Taylor and @Kuba_INFO_FA, thanks for sharing. I can confirm that this is the normal behavior for now. Although itâs possible to re-order custom field columns in list view, this order is not connected to the fields in the task itself. We wonât have updates to share about this request yet, but we will be sure to keep you posted!

Hi There
Just wanted to check if my understanding is correct here.
I have tasks organized in this order on the column view
But they appear in a different order in the Board view:
Of course we prefer using the board view
Is my takeaway from the above message correct that **there is to-date no method to reorganize the tags on the board view? **
Thanks!
Welcome to the Asana Community Forum @JB_Rivail
As Vanessa mentioned here you can reorder it in list view.
For board view it depends on how the order is set up via the customize menu.
To make changes to the order in which custom fields show within a task you can rearrange the order here

I would like an update regarding this. For example I would love to see X projects fields above the Y projects fields. Instead of projects fields appearing based on when the initial project was created. Thank you for your help regarding this matter

I am wondering, how do I reorder so that the first column in a List is actually what is in the 2nd column. I am trying to move the 2nd âcolumnâ âMove Leftâ and it is greyed out. When I am in the Customize view, the 2nd column is actually listed first.
I ran into this again today, and can confirm it is still not solved. It is very troublesome, as we want specific tags to come first on any task, and another list of tags to come second. The only way to fix the order is to delete the whole group and add it back, which does not scale at all. It would be a really simple enhancement to allow tag groups to be reordered from within the task detail itself. Any updates @Vanessa_N? I couldnât help but notice this was first mentioned 5 years ago. What is the proper forum for submitting a development request to solve this issue? Thank you!
