It would be great if each task had a unique ID or auto generated number, which was searchable and displayable.
It should also be able to be automatically added to the task name (if desired) when a task is created from a form / other integration or manual input
There should be a way to create an own TaskId. This TaskId should be linked to a specific project or no project. F.e if I create in my Project001 a Task with the autonumber 00001 and so on, this Id is unique for this project. If I link this task to another Project and there is also a autoNumber Field the task has two autonumber Ids. one for Project001 and another for Project002. But in this way you have a simple way to create TaskIds with autonumber fields. Not every Project needs IDs but there should be some sort of easy identifier to find a task. Of course when I search for a number it means tha I can find more than one task → Possible Soltuion: Each project gets also an ID or prefix like in Jira f.e. Pro001-0001 (Pro001 is the Project Id and 0001 the task Id) So you can find every task also in its possible project context.

I have merged your post into an existing feedback request thread. Don’t forget to upvote.
In the meantime, some possible workarounds are listed here under point F9
I cannot fathom how Asana still has not added this feature. ![]()
I also cannot fathom how Asana has still not added or even addressed this feature - it about 6 years old now! Frustrating. This thread is similar to at least two other threads on the same topic…
At iDO (and with the help of Astogi), we have created something that might help with this feature request.
It is a simple bot that you can invite to any project (as a guest). It will automatically rename the tasks you create, adding a unique iD. The numbering is based on the project name initials.

The beta is free to test

Hi All, Erik here who started this thread back in 2018. Still nothing from Asana on this, but I did find something.
I did an export of a project this morning into a csv file and what was the first column? Drum roll, please… Task ID
Yes, that’s right folks, Task ID. So, common sense told me to copy paste one of the Task Ids provided by Asana on that csv into the search field of Asana.
So I copied 1205654011661740 into the search filed and what did I get? Nada!!
No tasks match your search
Try being less specific or using different keywords.
Yup, you can’t get any worse of a project management software company if they provide you the actual task id in a report and then will not have the functionality to search said Task ID that they just gave you. Absolutely bonkers!
End of rant.
Searching for the task ID does actually work.
The problem is that you most likely opened the CSV in Excel which truncates the last digit of the ID because it can’t by default handle numbers that large.
You can either open it a specific way in Excel to preserve all digits, or open it in Google Sheets which dosn’t have the truncation problem. For more on both of these options, see this thread:
Bottom line, it’s Microsoft’s fault, not Asana’s!
Hi Phil, admirable that you are defending Asana’s honor, but not this time.
CSV Task ID: 1205654011661740
Asana url: Log in - Asana
So let’s look at this, yes, the last number of the url is changed from 7 to 0 in the csv, Microsoft being bad? Or maybe Asana issue, who knows.
So you say that the task ID is searchable? I put in the last part of the url, which is the task ID, the first part is the project, I presume.
Searched: 1205654011661747 result: Nada!
Searched: 1202646780794177/1205654011661747 result: Nada!
Searched: 120565401166174 (missing the last number) result: Nada! *Any other database software would have brought up anything with those numbers even if missing the last number.
The task id that is in the url and the csv are still unsearchable in a database driven software called Asana.
They do not care about task ids.
I’m not sure where or how you’re doing the search but searching for a task ID definitely works - see this Loom to watch it in action.
Hi Phil,
I stand corrected on part of that. I was just hitting Enter, which most humans would, and would think that the View All results would have that task as a result. But it doesn’t. You have add the number and then it populates below and you can click that, but if you hit enter, Nada.
Again poor search design by Asana.
And we are still waiting for that actual task id to be in…the task.
Interesting! Yes, definitely agree
, that’s bad design that it works if you don’t press Enter but doesn’t work if you do.
Not a comment on design, but just for added info in case it’s of interest, the two search approaches offer different capabilities, for better or worse. See my post and the entire thread and related links for more info:

Ah yes, I forgot about that discussion, @lpb! ![]()
This is a critical feature for us that is making workflow very difficult.
If a task is created and we share that with our client, then the task name changes - searchability is very difficult afterwards. We also work with multiple clients so staying organized is not easy. Ideally a very simple autonumbering field would be tremendously helpful.
Hi everyone, thanks for advocating for this feature and sharing your feedback!
Today, I have exciting news for all of you who are managing a boatload of tickets and deliverables in Asana. We’re rolling out unique and readable IDs for tasks! ![]()
