Project Timeline and Baselines

I’m trying to see the baseline for task duration vs. actual completion time. I can see it in gantt view for some projects, but not all. What are set step by step instructions I should follow, and how should my project be set up to ensure I can use the baseline feature? Is there a better way I can visualize the projected timeline vs actual timeline?
