Making a Packing List and Checking It Twice 🧳

Heyhey everybody,

As you can probably guess, there’s not a day that goes by where I’m not in Asana for my work on the community team. But did you know that I also use Asana for my personal projects? It’s helped me organize everything from birthday parties to social media plans to my most recent venture…moving across the country! That’s right - I used Asana to organize my packing list. As most of you have experienced, moving can be one of the most stressful things to go through. But I knew Asana had my back to help make my move as smooth and efficient as possible.

  • Sections: I originally just started to take inventory of all the items I had currently in my apartment. You never quite realize how much stuff you have until you’ve created yourself a miles-long Asana project… From there, I decided to organize sections by what items we did and didn’t want. I created Keep, Sell, Give away, Toss, and Not sure; and moved items into their respective sections.

  • Custom fields: After I built out the sections, I realized there were many variables to this process. If I sold an item, how much would I sell it for? As I packed my “Keep” items, how would I know which box they were in? It was custom fields to the rescue! I created a Price numeric field for the items I would sell, and in the task description, I put the original item price and listing URL, making it an easy copy and paste for resell platforms. For organizing boxes, I first created a custom field for each item’s category, like Kitchen, Entertainment/games, Bedroom, etc. Then I discovered that writing “Entertainment/games” on a bunch of boxes wasn’t so efficient…so I created a numeric and alphabetic system for each category, used a custom field to input each item’s box code, and wrote that on each box. Now, when I open each box, I’ll know exactly what’s inside.
    • Smart fields: As I built out my project and started adding more items, Asana AI automatically filled out my custom fields for me, making the process that much faster! I didn’t have to go through each task and categorize them, Smart fields did all that work and thought process for me.

Very practical and efficient, @LoMo!

I bet those custom fields enabled some helpful tab views, like Grouping by Category, Box Code, etc. as alternatives for your regular, actionable Section/Disposition main view.
