I want to only show specific goals in each portfolio whenever I am assigning a connected goal to a project.
I realized that all goals show up in the dropdown for the connected goals columns in each portfolio. But I want only specific goals to be shown in the list to choose from.
This will limit confusion and make assigning the goals be easier.
Please note that the goals are assigned to specific teams.
In Asana’s current implementation, the Connected Goals dropdown shows all available goals, which can indeed become overwhelming. While there isn’t a direct way to filter the goals dropdown within a portfolio, here are some potential workarounds:
Using Goal Naming Conventions:
Prefix goal names with team/portfolio identifiers (e.g., “TECH-”, “MKTG-”)
This makes it easier to quickly identify relevant goals in the dropdown
You can type the prefix in the dropdown to filter quickly
Goal Organization Structure:
Create separate Goal parent items for each team/portfolio
Organize goals hierarchically under these parents
While all goals will still appear, they’ll be more organized in the dropdown
Using Custom Fields:
Add a custom field for “Team/Portfolio Assignment”
Tag goals with their relevant team/portfolio
While this won’t filter the dropdown, it makes it clearer which goals belong where
The key limitation is that Asana doesn’t currently support restricting or filtering the Connected Goals dropdown by team or portfolio. You might want to:
Submit this as a feature request to Asana
Use clear naming conventions in the meantime
Consider documenting which goals belong to which portfolios in your team’s process guide
