Do parent tasks need to have a date assignment or duration?

I have a number of parent/child tasks, and I have been leaving the date field and duration fields blank for the parent, since I’m using it more as a phase or subphase of a project.

Does the parent task need to have either the date or duration or both? And if so, how do you make these fields automatically update or change based on the needs of the tasks below?

For example:

  • Parent task
  • Child task 1 - Date Range- Duration

  • Child task 2 - Date Range- Duration

  • Child task 3 - Date Range- Duration

I often use tasks in the same way. As one bigger step in a project or even as a kind of mini project. Those parent tasks do not need a date or duration, but they could.

Excellent! thank you! I just wanted to validate that they weren’t required. My previous software installation allowed you to create different levels and anything under that level would roll up the start & end dates and total duration for the subtasks.
