CSV to create custom field

Looking to import our employees at our company into a custom field in Asana. Is this possible or is that option not available yet?

Doing it manually would be very time-consuming.

Hi @KimberlyAnn_DiCredic, great question!

At this time, it is not possible to import a CSV file to custom fields. Iā€™ve gone ahead and moved your post to the #productfeedback category to give you and other Community members the opportunity to vote for this feature

Iā€™ll keep you posted if I have any updates from our Product team on this!

You can actually do this now in a roundabout way if you donā€™t have the custom field yet and want to create a new one.

  1. Create a new blank project
  2. Create a csv import file with two columns - Name and Employee (or whatever you want the custom field to be called). Youā€™d then leave the first ā€˜Nameā€™ column blank and list the employees you want in the custom field in the 2nd ā€˜Employeeā€™ column.
  3. Start the import process in the new blank project and select ā€˜Make Changesā€™
  4. Select the Employee column and change to the Drop-down field option
  5. Continue to project

Asana will then import the new field into the project with all of the employees as drop-downs without creating any tasks, you can then edit the field and add it to your field library if needed.

Hopefully this helps until there is native functionality to do this.

Thanks for this. I am struggling with the names, it will only give me text as an option one imported.

I tried this and it still imports all the rows as tasks, even if name field is blank. It just took a few seconds.

For anyone struggling with this; after you import your csv, preview it by pressing ā€œmake changesā€ and there you can change the type of field.
