Please implement the Bulk Delete feature at your earliest convenience.
This has been a great nuisance for many times. Long time user here, using Asana for roughly 7 years. Each time I do administrative work on our projects, I find it extremely frustrating to have to go through each already deleted task manually and having to do this for many entries.
If this seems to be some security concern, at least allow the admin of the board or organization to do this.
There is a way to bulk delete. With your completed tasks visible, highlight all the tasks you want to permanently delete with the shift key. There should be a black tool bar that pops up on the bottom of your screen with the option to delete all selected tasks (trash can icon).
The best way I’ve found is to create a “Completed Tasks” section and create a rule that automatically moves tasks to this section. Then, when I’m ready to “batch delete,” I delete the “Completed Tasks” section, select the option that says “Delete Section AND Delete ### tasks?” After that, I simply create a new “Completed Tasks” section and reconnect the rule. It’s not as great as “Delete All Tasks Right Now Because I said So” but it works.

Adding to this request - we should be able to delete from search. I want to clear old tasks from many users so they are not my tasks. I can get them on search but cant delete them.
I use Asana for work… but I also use it for all my personal tasks in a separate workspace. This includes shopping lists for every meal I’ve made since I started using Asana for this. I want this information permanently deleted, and it’s ridiculous to have to do it one by one. Please add support for this feature, the only reason you wouldn’t have something like this is because you are likely using our data corpus in a way that seems to be a bit disingenuous to what the user is intending to do through the interface.
Here’s another workaround that can help in one particular case. We create aliases and forwarding rules so that we can automate the creation of tasks from certain email addresses. Unfortunately, if you get the forwarding rules wrong you can easily create a “Task Mail Bomb”…for instance today we accidentally created 20,000 tasks due to a “Mail Loop” where the “Task assigned” notification created a new task for the “Task Assigned” notification and so on, and so on, 20,000 times.
The easiest thing to do turned out to be creating a duplicate of the spammed project, but be sure to deselect the duplicate tasks checkbox in the creation dialog. You want to create a perfect STRUCTURAL version of the project, but without tasks.
You can then go to each user and assign valid tasks from the spammed project to the duplicate project, and remove the spammed project from the project list.
After you’ve done that you can delete the spammed project, and then rename the duplicate project to the original project name.
All the spammy tasks are gone!
This is A LOT easier than going through and deleting 1000’s of tasks.
Adding my vote here as well. I want to permanently delete 200+ deleted tasks, clean asana, but the idea of doing this one-by-one is daunting. When will this basic Bulk Delete or Empty Trash be available?
This is not good. I need to bulk delete hundreds of tasks that are not in projects but are assigned to my team and that is no way to treat a team member. Maybe I will create a new project. Manually associate all of these tasks to it and then delete the new dummy project. OMG. I made these mistakes and now I’m going to suffer for sure.
Echoing that this is still an issue and is really disrupting our Asana setup/implementation. Random tasks that don’t seem to be associated with anything are showing up on people’s “My Tasks”. When I went through the trash and unassigned people, they were all brought back into the projects, sigh. Please make this a priority!!!
Definitely a feature that is still needed! Huge timewaster, currently manually deleting dozens of tasks from deleted projects to remove them from colleagues’ task list.
One that’s actually pretty easy to pull off.
As long as you can configure a search that contains the tasks you wish to delete, and none that you don’t want to delete, you can do it.
Configure the (advanced) search
Check it thoroughly (all tasks should be deleted)
Click the first task while holding the SHIFT key
Scroll all the way down
Click the last task while holding the SHIFT key
(ignore the warning that you can change max 50 tasks at once)
Briefly consult with your god
Press TAB-BACKSPACE
Apparently they keypresses do work.
I just trashed 1.400 tasks at once. For added effect you can have two (same) windows open at once. In the window where you execute the deletion, they will vanish at once. In the other window, you’ll see that Asana actually takes way longer to sync the deletion.
Hi. I cant find the bulk delete button. This question was from 2018 so Im assuming this feature would have been added by now, but I cant find it. Have I missed it?
