Auto calculate due date with duration & dependencies

I’m glad to see the evolution of this functionality! I’ve entered dependencies and I see them in the Gantt view. When I add a duration to a task in Gantt view, it calculates the due date based on today as the start date, rather than using the dependencies to determine the start date.

This isn’t how the duration and dependencies work together. Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Thanks.

Welcome, @J_Greenwood,

I think your question was answered here:

There are a number of ways to respect dependencies and otherwise shift due dates which you can learn about in the Asana help, but what you’re asking for specifically is covered above I think.

Thanks,

Larry

Hi, i have read several threads in this forum about task star/end date and dependancies. And i’m still a bit confused.
Is there a way to calculate the end date of a task by having dependencies and duration of that task? Or do i need Flowsana for that? If that’s the case, how do I get Flowsana?
Also, for some reason I can’t add manually the Duration in my Gantt view. And, I can’t add the Duration column in the List view, or as a field in the tasks. Can anyone help me please?

Also, how can i add duration shorted than a 1 day, for example, 4 hours. I’m not able to add “0.5”

Hi @Teresa_Alonso,

You’re not missing anything; that’s the way the Gantt view works. (No, I don’t understand why it doesn’t work the way you’re expecting it to.)

The Dynamic Duration workflow of our Flowsana integration works the way you expect. Specifically, you build a project template in which you construct your tasks with dependencies and durations; then you create a project from that template; then you enter an overall project start date for that project and Flowsana fills in all of the task dates based on the durations and dependencies as you’re expecting it would. (And it updates task dates going forward also based on your structure.)

You can go to our website to create a free 30-day trial, so you can try it out before you subscribe. FYI Flowsana pricing info is here.

Unfortunately at this time neither Asana nor Flowsana support task durations less than 1 day.

has anyone found a workaround on this yet? just wondering

Hi - any update on this? Like many folks on this thread my organization went with Asana but I was shocked there is no auto calculate on the duration based on days and dependencies. As someone who typically works on large scale project plans, this feature is crucial when mapping out plan that have dependencies. I do not want/nor do I think my company will allow the flowsana integration. I cannot realistically manual calaucate 2+ years worth of dates and then not have them auto update based on real completions.

Another year and this is still an issue we are encountering for our PM. Dependencies are not the answer and to manually add each task when there are hundreds across a number of projects for us this is a huge time waste and frustration point for us. have the developers got any update as to when this vital part of project management will be a feature?

Trying to build a project plan in the same manner as it is done in Microsoft Project.

Task 1 is made with a start date. The duration is inserted and the end date is then calculated. Task 2 is dependent on Task 1 which would then become it’s predecessor and the duration of Task 2 inserted as say 2 days. The start and end date of Task 2 is automatically calculated and scheduled based on this.

This is how Microsoft Project works and it’s the main reason engineering companies use the software. It’s not feasible estimating start and end dates manually for 300 line items.

Hi @Marco_Delport and welcome to the forum,

FYI I merged your post with an existing thread for this request. You can scroll to the top and add your vote for it!

Also, please note:

  • Asana now has a Gantt view that includes a Duration field; it doesn’t work exactly like MS Project but you might find it sufficient for your needs.
  • If not, another alternative is our Flowsana integration.

Hi everyone! First, I’m both surprised and apologetic that for a topic I’ve been so passionate about over the last 9 months I haven’t given you all an update.

We early access released a first take on duration this past Summer, but the user experience tradeoffs ultimately didn’t meet our quality bar and we unshipped.

That being said, a new version has been under development and should be released soon. I updated the status and will keep a better eye on this task to keep you all updated moving forward!
