Not a full solution, and a workaround, so in that spirit I offer it. The approach to using a parent task for the master info and doing the Assign Duplicates in subtasks gets around some of the complaints you had (but not all of them). But note the extra task you mention was not created by Asana; that’s the “model” task (subtask) that is used to generate the duplicates and can be quickly deleted with a shortcut or menu choice.
