When changing the status of a custom task type, a separator line is needed between active and done.

When editing a task type, the status is distinguished between active and done.

When changing the task status, it’s difficult to tell the difference between active and done.

I’d like a separator line between active and done in the status display.

One idea I tried was to create a “DoneTask” at the top of Done list.
(I think it’s easy to understand for now.)

It was hard to understand, so I made a dummy.
I think it’s easier to understand.

To add to this request, I think it would make sense to follow the separator that exists in the status updates menu for Projects, Portfolios and Goals; this separator helps differentiate between open or closed.

One simple line can have a big impact - let’s add this into the task types dropdown menu, too!

Projects & Portfolios:

Goals (which also have Open and Closed labels)

And on a side note, in the task types modal, instead of Active and Done, perhaps it should follow Open and Closed since that language appears in Goals already?

My two cents:

  • For dropdown menus, use either a) “option groups” (the Goals “Open” and “Closed” labels are called option groups), or b) separators, but never both together, which is redundant.
  • I prefer (a) option groups because they are more informative than separators, and their only downside is that they add one extra vertical line.
  • The above change helps consistency.
  • I don’t believe it helps consistency to make all these option group labels identical because each set (goal status, portfolio/project status, custom task type status) is a different thing, but Asana designers should review to make sure there’s a reason for any recommended differernces, e. g., both “Active” and “Open,” or “Done” and “Closed.”

(I would vote for this if we all happened to agree on the above!)

Thanks,

I think @Richard_Sather’s recommendation to make it similar to the Project Status is aesthetically pleasing.

But I think @lpb’s recommendation is better for UX. It removes ambiguity. The only thing I’d add is that I’d personally also like to see one more group added before “Incomplete.”

Right now we just have Incomplete and Complete—which assumes all items will even be accepted and worked on. Which isn’t the case (at least not for us anyway haha). I’m a fan of something simple like:

  • Not started
  • Active
  • Done

And I wouldn’t be opposed to Done and Closed being separated as I view them as distinct in my mental model (and so do several other tools).
