Hi there, Iām wondering if thereās a way to automate or set rules for due dates in subtasks within Templates to work backward?
For instance, if I create a task from a template and manually set a due date for the task, say June 30th, is there a way for certain subtasks to automatically get due dates, such as 2 weeks before the taskās due date?
Iām looking for a solution that doesnāt require integration with external sources, ideally something that can be done within Asana alone. Thanks for your help!
Hereās the process for clarity:
- Create a New Task using a Template
- Set manually a Due Date for the Task (e.g., June 30th)
- Subtasks Automatically Receive Due Dates (e.g., if set 2 weeks before the task due date, it would be June 17th)
Appreciate any help you can give. Thank you!
Hi @Gabriel_Maureen_Cri1, thanks for reaching out! Itās currently not possible to add relative dates before the task is due in task templates. Iāve gone ahead and merge your post with Templates & due dates: having both "days before" and "days after" within the same project to consolidate feedback. We will let you know if this is something we plan to implement in the future!
Hi Emily, appreciate your help on this. May I ask if the image that Mr. Bastien sent last April 2022 is not the version/feature available now? I canāt see the option to select āAfter/Before project start dateā on my end.

Itās there; you need to click that little pencil icon to the right of āAfter project start dateā.
Appreciate your assistance, Phil! The 1st and 2nd photo comes from the other writer/user above. The third photo is what shows from my end. For some reason, thereās no pencil icon or option to select the Due Date rule. Is this something that is not available anymore with the updated version of Asana, or maybe because of my subscription or User permission?
Will appreciate any help given.
Apologies, I got confused because the screenshots were not identified as to their source.
Also I should have read further up the thread - I see now youāre asking about Task templates which are completely different from the topic of this thread which is Project templates. The screenshot and the pencil icon applies to Project templates.
As Emily said, what youāre asking for canāt be done in native Asana for a Task template.
Thank you so much for the clarification on this. Is there a way that this can be done with the help of integration or other methods? Do you have a recommendation in mind? Thanks!
You can do it with the Add subtasks rule action in our Flowsana integration. Thatās not exactly the same as a task template - you would need to trigger the subtasks to be added based on some rule trigger as opposed to a user manually adding the subtasks by selecting a task template - but itās one option.
I am trying to do the same thing would love to see your template if you care to share.
Iām pleased to inform you this is now a thing. ![]()
Amazing news! I still need the due dates in the before and after format when it comes to task templates. We use one asana project per client, and have multiple projects for the same clients that we host in the same project. We use task templates to generate a new series of tasks for a project, but these are relative due dates and are calculated based on when the task is created and not based on a set due date.
