I use subtasks all the time. I get frustrated with the lack of options for setting up rules for subtasks. I have rules to create new subtasks as other subtasks are completed and the task moves through the project. I need the fields from the main task to populate in the new subtasks as they are created. Is there a work around for this I could use? Is there something I am doing wrong in setting up the rules?
While it’s not the greatest option, when building the subtask description in the rule, you can click the plus sign to insert Variables. This action will copy the input from the main task for each variable (field) you choose, allowing you to arrange them in any order or format you prefer.
Please note that these variables will not update if the fields in the parent task are changed after the subtask is generated.
I had no idea you could add multiple variables to the task name. It’s not what I was wanting exactly, but it will work for now. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hoping that there will be better rule options for subtasks soon. We’ve had to create so many work arounds because of the lack of functionality in this area. I myself prefer subtasks to keep things better grouped together. But there are times I cannot use them because of this.
FYI you can use rules in our Flowsana integration to accomplish this, as our rules let you trigger on a given task but have the rule’s action(s) apply to that task’s subtasks.
@Phil_Seeman Respectfully, no. We should not need to purchase something additional for subtask rules to work the same as the task rules. Asana needs to work on these improvements.
