What’s new?

  • Deleted a custom field by accident? You can now restore it directly in Asana from Advanced Search > Deleted.

  • This update is designed to help bring back the field and recover the related values, rules, and charts tied to it.

  • That means less disruption for teams using custom fields to power reporting, automations, and cross-project workflows.

  • It’s especially helpful when a shared field affects multiple teams and you need a faster path to recovery.

FAQ

  • What if the field was deleted a while ago?

Recovery is limited to a 30-day window, so older deletions won’t be available to restore.

  • Can anyone restore a deleted field?

No — restore access is limited to eligible field admins.

  • Does restoring the field also restore everything exactly as it was before?

Not completely. While the field recovery is designed to restore the field and related values, rules, and charts, project view settings that previously sorted, filtered, or grouped by that field aren’t restored in this phase.

We’ve seen how disruptive it can be when an important field disappears unexpectedly, so we’re excited to share a more self-serve recovery path.

If this update would have saved your team time, we’d love to hear about it. And if you’ve run into this kind of issue before, this Community thread is a good example of the problem this update is meant to make easier: Restore a deleted custom field

This is AWESOME! Thanks for rolling out this feature.

When someone’s in Work Access Mode will they see more deleted fields than when they would acting as their regular user account?

I would be curious if that could let superadmins help out individual users in their organizations more effectively. We’ve got ~2000 users at varying levels of technical expertise so I’d be concerned that some folks may not be able to restore a field on their own very well, and a superadmin doing it for them could be a nice feature.

How will this functionality work with rules that were built based on the custom field. For example, we had just started a new project, built out some pretty substantial rules that included creation of sub tasks based on the value in one of the custom fields. At some point, two of the same custom fields were added to the project, so we deleted one…and we picked wrong. It was the one used in the rule, and once it was deleted, we were unable to edit the rule - we had to delete it and start over. It could have been worse, but it was definitely disappointing and required time and effort to rebuild.

Hi, @Chelsea_Schulte – When you restore a field, it will also be restored in any rules of which it was a part.
