Let users choose whether the "No Value" group in List view is at the TOP or BOTTOM of the list

Right now when you group by a field in a List view of Projects in a portfolio, any projects that don’t have a value for that field automatically get grouped together at the bottom in a section called “No Value”.

Sometimes we actually want to highlight when projects are missing key information, or simply want the exceptions to be at the forefront instead of hidden wayyyyy down at the bottom of what can sometimes be really long lists.

For example, we have many “focus areas” within our projects (over 30) and even with all of the groups collapsed you’d still have to scroll down to notice that there are some projects that haven’t been assigned a focus area yet and need to be.

Ideally this would be a dropdown or toggle right alongside the options for sorting the group ASC/DESC where you can indicate whether the “No Value” group should appear at the TOP or BOTTOM.

Hi @cosmo ,

You could add an additional option to your grouping field such as ‘not set’ and have a rule set this as the default option once a project is added to your portfolio (if it is empty).

You can then decide the position of your own ‘not set’ option by arranging it at the top/bottom within the options of your field that you are grouping your projects by.

@Richard_Sather Thank you for the idea! This works if I have edit access to the field I am grouping by, but often times I cannot edit the field.

Hi @cosmo , can you send a screenshot to illustrate the times you cannot edit the field?
PS: oh, do you mean that on some occasions you do not have edit access to some particular fields? If not, can’t you request access?

⌙ Yes, exactly!

⌙ I could, but there’s no guarantee it will be granted.
⌙ Even if it is granted, adding a ‘not set’ option may cause confusion or be an inappropriate option we don’t want users selecting in the other instances where the field is used, making it an undesirable change.
⌙ Even if it’s granted and added to that field, now all the other projects need to add the same automation to make ‘not set’ the default value if none is provided for that field.
⌙ But the biggest issue is that now we’d need to add this option AND automation to every field we want to group by to have those with missing values appear at the top.

This feels like a lot of work for something that could be a TOP/BOTTOM toggle in the group by settings modal of a tab.

DESIRED BEHAVIOR
After selected a field to group by, and choosing whether to Show or Hide empty groups (which right now most people don’t even know you can do because it’s hidden behind the “…” icon), after choosing “Show” I should then be able to select whether those empty groups show at the TOP or BOTTOM of the list.

This setting would be independent for each group and sub-group.

For what it’s worth, @cosmo , most of the issues you mention can be solved by Bundles, available on Enterprise tiers.

I appreciate you trying to find a workaround, but for the reasons mentioned above (particularly the last one) even Bundles would not solve the issue, and so the feature request stands
