How do I move tasks from one project to another?

I’ve tried dragging tasks from the list and board views into the new project in the sidebar. That doesn’t work. It does nothing.

I’ve tried opening the tasks and adding them to a new project by clicking “add to projects”. When I do that, only the task name will appear in the new project. All of the other fields are blank.

I’m currently on my free trial. If I can’t figure this out, it’s going to be a deal breaker.

I just tried asking Asana AI to move a task from one project into another. The AI said it moved the task for me. It did not. There were no changes to the task, and it didn’t move into the new project. So, that’s three methods I’ve tried that don’t work.

Hello @Donnie_Prather, welcome to the forum!

You can add tasks to additional projects from the detail pane. Just below the due date you will see the current project, and below that there is an option to add to projects. Once it has been added to the other project you have the option to click the x on the current project to remove it.

To get all of the field entries to carry over, you’ll need to ensure that all of your fields in the current task have been added to the org library and added to the new project, specifically from the library. You can add a field to the library by clicking the dropdown menu next to the field name, selecting edit field, and then clicking the box at the bottom that says add to library.

This can also be done on multiple tasks at once by bulk selecting them and using the clipboard with the + button on the bottom navigation. This will give you the same Add to projects option as described above, or the ability to move them to another project by selecting the pencil icon next to the current one.

@Donnie_Prather, sorry, I did see this and was revising my post. You need to ensure that all of the fields from the original project are added to the org library and subsequently added from the library to the second project.

Thank you. I’ll give it a shot! I’ll just need to figure out how.

I have 4 projects all uploaded from .csv, and all with identical column headers/fields.

In project 1: Customize > Fields > Field1 > Add to Field Library > Save Changes

In Project 2: Customize > Fields > Add > Browse Library > Field1 > This field is now duplicated in project two with the relevant information only showing in the added field. The existing field of the same name is still blank.

@Donnie_Prather You will need to replace the existing field in project 2 with the one from the library. If this project already contains information in its existing field, the other option would be to create a rule that says when Field 1 is changed > Change Existing Field 1 to match… this could end up being a large rule depending on the number of options though.

Picture it as three tables… Project 1, Org, and Project 2. You are moving a bucket from Project 1 to the Org table for both projects to share. Project 2 contains a bucket with the same name as the one on the Org table, but they are not related in any way.

Thank you. I think this resolves my question. There is no simple way to move tasks from one project to another.

My projects are weeks of the month. My Tasks are jobs that need to be done any time within that week. The jobs are recurring monthly, or twice monthly jobs. Customers call and ask us to move them around on the schedule frequently. If the solution is more convoluted than the problem of having to copy and paste the jobs from one spreadsheet/week to another, then I suppose Asana isn’t for me.

Thanks again.

There is definitley some setup involved when it comes to using custom fields across multiple projects. I think in your case I would have combined all of the tasks into one project, set up the other 3 with Org fields, and then transfered the tasks.

Awesome. The drag and drop would still be nice, but I just tried this, and it worked perfectly. It’ll take a little longer to set up than simply uploading 4. csv’s but should be simple once setup is complete.

Thanks again!
