I set up dependencies on 3 approval subtasks, but the dependency rules only kick in if I open the subtask. I’m still able to complete subtasks with dependencies if I do it from the parent task view.
Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?
I attached 3 screenshots below:
One of them shows that the subtask called Approval 2 is dependent on finishing Approval 1.
The second shows an Asana message preventing me from completing Approval 2 while Approval 1 isn’t completed — this happens when I try to complete Approval 2 by opening the subtask itself.
The last screenshot shows how I’m able to complete Approval 2 from the parent task view while Approval 1 isn’t completed yet. No message appears.
Thanks for the clear description and good screenshots.
I’ve moved this topic to Product Feedback where you can click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the purple Vote button (as I just did!).
To clarify: When you receive the popup notifying you that Approval 2 is still blocked by Approval 1, do you click the “Approve” button in the popup? And then find that Approval 2 remains incomplete?
If you don’t click the “Approve” button in the popup, could you please try that and report back?
Yes, if I click the “Approve” button on the popup the approval completes correctly.
But the issue I’m describing is that, if I click “Approve” from the parent task view (without opening the subtask), I don’t get any popup at all. There’s no warning that Approval 2 is blocked by Approval 1.
I have the same experience when completing subtasks assigned to others while in the parent task view.
In the entire time that I’ve used Asana, I’ve never received a notification or alert when doing this. So, I wouldn’t say it’s a bug. I think that’s how Asana intends for subtask completion to function in the parent task view.
However, I do think it would be helpful if users received a “warning” notification in these instances … I have some teammates who unintentionally (but consistently) mark other folks’ tasks complete instead of their own. I suspect they’re doing this from the parent task view and, therefore, not being alerted that they’re marking someone else’s task complete.
