Custom Fields in a Portfolio not populating

I created a portfolio and added a custom field that has data in it from the project. However when I add that custom field into my portfolio it remains blank.

Hi @anon31530090,

Portfolio and Project custom fields are two different things and they aren’t connected. Creating a custom fields you have in a project at the Portfolio level will automatically update your Portfolio custom fields since these aren’t connected. You will need to update your Portfoliio custom field manually!

Thank You!!!

@Marie Just checking in since it’s been a while since this thread has been updated. Other than typing in the status report, have you been able to connect the custom fields on the portfolio and the projects?

Hi, I am looking for the same answer. I have created a custom field “Effort hours” at the project level and I would like to roll the sum up to the Portfolio so I can see how much effort each projects are. I do not want to have to manually calculate this and add it to the Portfolio.

thanks for whoever can help.

Hello,

I am also looking for the same answer. I have Asana created Estimated Time and Actual Time at the project level and I would like to see their sum at the portfolio level. It’s an extra effort to sum them from different sections of project and add it to the Portfolio.

Is this something planned in near future?

Thanks

Hello,
I would also like to be able to compare the custom fields of several projects on a portfolio level.
the solution listed did not work for me.

Thanks

I am searching the forum for workarounds and surprised to find the portfolio-level dashboard severely lacking what seems so user-friendly and intuitive within the project level. When I have custom organizational fields in use on every project in my portfolio, it’s there for a purpose and I expected to be able to find and use those custom fields in chart-building at the portfolio level. I can’t make sense of the custom fields I do see and can’t find any answers for how to make a portfolio dashboard useful for insights across projects based on the criteria we value most.

@Elizabeth_Lumsden,

Here’s a portfolio dashboard chart that uses a custom field:

Does that help? If not, can you include some screenshots to indicate custom fields in your portfolio and where you want to use them in specific charts but can’t?

Thanks,

Larry

I realized a Search bar was showing up to the left of the custom field list. The custom list was showing only 5 choices and I couldn’t figure out why. After searching for something, it appears in the list to the right, but then the pop-out list is often disappearing when I move my mouse to the right to select the item. Just using the arrow keys to navigate and selecting with Enter is working much better for me. I am working on a Macbook with the Asana app. It may cooperate better in a browser. Thanks for your response. I’m well on my way now.

I am using the Asana app (version 2.1.4) on a Macbook Air (Apple M2 chip with Sonoma 14.5). In case this is helpful to someone else… after sending a screen recording they let me know, “It appears that your screen is zoomed in while in your browser, which is why the search bar is on the left and the results populate on the right. In this case, can you please attempt to zoom out of your screen in your browser to see if this will resolve the issue?”

I reminded them I am not in a browser, but in the Asana app. I don’t recall ever zooming in and nothing is showing me what % I am currently at. When I clicked View > Actual Size in the menu it zoomed in even more than my default, but when I clicked View > Zoom Out a few times it eventually put the search bar in the correct place.
