ChatGPT in Asana

With how popular ChatGPT is becoming and as it is being integrated into services like Zoho, WhatsApp, iMessage etc, I think it would be awesome if there was a way to interact with it in the comments of an Asana task.

I think this would be a great way to start adding AI to Asana.

I don’t believe Asana would do anything native, but you can build it yourself using Zapier,

ChatGPT is pretty amazing IMO. But I’m not seeing a good integration point with Asana task comments. Can you post some uses cases where you’re thinking it could fit in there?

Hi @Phil_Seeman

I tend to set up projects for resources and research and being able to have that information on a task where the taskname is a topic I am researching would be very useful.

I haven’t had a chance to test how this works with Zoho but this link exists and it appears to be used for notes, which is similar to how I use certain Asana projects and tasks.

I guess it could also be incorporated into the messaging feature of Asana but in my mind it would work well on task comments where the tasks aren’t necessarily actionable items but simply a good way to organize and save research.

I have an Asana project called “Learning” and put tasks in here with the name of a subject I want to learn more about. Being able to ask questions in the comments and get answers back would be a helpful way to improve the way I use Asana as a Wiki. Perhaps not as common of a use-case for others but something I find very helpful.

I think using Zapier or another automation service to achieve this would lead to a very high number of zaps and either exhaust the free service too quickly or run up a large bill on the premium versions.

I hope that helps.

Yesterday my team and a partner finished a first version of a chatGPT embedded into Asana! We will share more details soon, but you’ll be able to simply mention the bot to ask a question and get an answer directly as a comment.

@Bastien_Siebman You’re my hero! Great idea RE: mentioning ChatGPT, that sounds like a great way to bring it into the mix in comments.

I look forward to giving it a try.

It would be great if you could @ tag ChatGPT in the task description, task comments or even the inbox.

It would also be great if you could assign a unique name of your own, like say I want to call my AI BobbyHill.

Merry Christmas.

You will be able to choose the name, as the admin. For now, we only support comments.

Here’s the announcement regarding our integration: 🤖 ChatGPT finally available within Asana

Make sure to fill in the form to test it!

We’ve used OpenAI and Zapier to create preliminary drafts for social media from news releases.

It works like this:

  1. We set up a new project “Social from News” and create a simple form that just takes a news story we’ve written as plain text input. We set view all tasks & board as the default view.
  2. We create two sections “In” and “Out”. “In” is at the top (on the left) as the first section.
  3. We write a zap that triggers on new tasks in that project
  4. The zap reads the task description, and adds it to a pre-written prompt
  5. The zap takes the completion (OpenAI output) and adds it as a comment to the task and moves it to the “out” section.
  6. The zap completes the task.
  7. We go to the completed task and read off the comment.

With Zapier, this workflow is easily replicable across several projects, by copying the zap and changing the prompt. With individually written prompts embedded for each one, a world of labour saving “gadget projects” opens up.

Of course, a better solution is to roll your own script to do this (much cheaper!) but Zapier gives you push-button ease of use (although it can be a bit clunky at times).

As a content creation company, mainly in the PR and writing sector, this is huge for us.

Now OpenAI is rolling out plugins, I would love to see the Asana devs create a plugin for ChatGPT so you can say:

“Hi ChatGPT, can you create me a task for next Tuesday in and assign it to myself”

Then have ChatGPT create the Asana task, assign you and set the date.

There’s a lot of potential for a plugin like that. Especially when you can speak to ChatGPT with audio.

We know Asana is cooking something because Dustin tweeted about it!

Thanks for sharing.

Looks interesting but yes, doesn’t really work the way I had in mind. Allowing a plugin to work with ChatGPT so you can ask it to create a task, project etc.

Hopefully, Asana’s focus on AI will continue to evolve and grow beyond its own ecosystem.

I like the “polite” slider in writing replies. Maybe Asana can add “humor” and “honesty” buttons like the robots in Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar”.
