[Rules] Set a start date based on the date the task was moved to another column

Task history would be nice in general, not just as "start dates’ but really determining the amount of time a task sits in any particular section of a board.

How long has this been in the backlog?
How long has this been in progress?
How long has this been in QA?
where backlog, in progress, and QA are all section titles.
We have automation that moves tasks from one section to another when you hit Complete. I wish it would capture the date as well.

Hi @Ciaran_Keller,

Have you seen this? “Time in section”

Hi!

This request came already up a couple of times, but it always got side tracked into a different topic.

The way we run our sprint boards, it would tremendously help, if there would be an action for rules to set the start date.

The scenario is, that I want to set the start date to the current date, when a task is moved into a section (e.g. “In Progress”). We are currently using a custom date field, but then I can’t use the calendar and timeline views for retrospective and current state as easily.

Since setting a date works for everything else BUT the start date, I wonder a bit if there are any plans to implement that some time?

@JanAlbiez,

I am merging your request with a product feedback that already exists on this topic. Please remember to vote for the feature.

@Phil_Seeman – is this a feature of Flowsana?

Christine

Unfortunately Flowsana doesn’t currently have the ability to set the start date. (FYI it’s a little more complicated than setting a due date via a rule, since setting the start date also requires setting the due date since you can’t have a start date without a due date.)

Can you please provide a link? Users have been asking for this feature for four (4) years, but we still don’t have it, why is that?

I’m really hoping to be able to set a Start Date to whatever the Due Date is if the Due Date hasn’t been set. Not exactly the same as the original request but close enough that I thought it should be added here. If this isn’t going to implemented, are there any work arounds?

Welcome, @Keaton_Newbold,

Sorry, I’m not following. Can you describe in more detail and/or give a specific example of what you would like to do?

Thanks,

Larry

I would like to create a custom rule like this:
When… Task is added to my tasks
Check if… Start date is empty
Do this… “Change start date… set start date equal to due date”

That last part in quotes is the part I would like to accomplish but isn’t currently possible (at least as far as I can tell). Basically I want the start date to automatically be set equal to the due date with the option of manually changing it if needed. Hope this makes more sense!

@Keaton_Newbold,

I’m afraid you can’t do that, with a rule or manually in the UI.

If you try to set a start date that matches the due date, Asana will remove the start date and just leave the due date.

To use start date, it must be any date earlier than the due date.

You can add a start date to any task with a due date at any time manually, so I’m not sure why you’d need the rule.

Thanks,

Larry

I would also like to see this feature!

Hi everybody.

I was searching for a solution to this problem, and with the new rule creator and I think I found it, please someone correct me if I got it wrong.

Objective: To set a start date base on the date a task is moved to a section (in this example, “In Progress”)

Rule:

When: Task is moved to a section
Check if: Section is “In Progress”
Do this: Set due date to:

  • Due date: the due date of the task that triggers the rule
  • Start date: the date this rule is triggered

Regards,

Thanks, @AdrianCB; I marked your post as the solution.

Asana added the ability to set Start date fairly recently. (The UI is a little confusing to me, and readers should remember that you can’t set Start date without also setting Due date, which is possible here.)

Larry

@Forum-team, Can you move this topic to the launched sub-category, if appropriate? Thanks!

Done! Thanks for the heads up @lpb! :white_check_mark:
