Microsoft or Google?

I’m watching the replay of a recent webinar, “Meeting teams where they work: The key to AI at scale,” and I’m wondering what people’s experience is using Asana with Google WS vs Microsoft? I’m thinking in terms of integration with Asana, meetings, and AI capabilities.

We’re currently using Google WS, but I’ve been asked to explore Microsoft as well. And watching this video, it almost seems to me like the integration with Microsoft is further along than the integration with Google (which surprises me, because of how well integrated Google is with Asana).

Input? Preferences? Pros and Cons of each? I appreciate any dialogue on this.

Interesting.

I had a quick look scan through the webinar, so do correct me if I’ve missed something.

Personally, I’m not convinced. For my independent work I’ve just decided to make the switch from Microsoft to Google, specifically with Claude.

Mostly, because I think using Claude has access to gmail, Google drive AND Asana. Yes copilot now has an Asana agent, but that agent can’t access files and email.

I think the Asana integrations in Teams and Copilot are best explained as a doorway into Asana. You choose whether to access Asana information by opening that door, but the interactions you have are exclusively with the information in Asana.

For instance, this is what the Asana agent in Copilot tells me:

No, I cannot directly access the files you have in SharePoint or OneDrive. As your assistant, I don’t have the ability to access, view, or retrieve files from your organization’s SharePoint sites or OneDrive storage. These platforms require proper authentication and permissions that are specific to your IPG Mediabrands account.

Also, this is what copilot tells me when I ask about accessing Asana:

I can’t directly access your Asana tasks and goals, but I can help you work with them if you share details or export them. You can either:

  • Describe what you’re working on or what goals you’ve set.
  • Upload a file or screenshot from Asana.
  • Or let me know what kind of help you need—like organizing tasks, setting priorities, or drafting updates.

Would you like to summarize your current goals or share a task list for review?

To me it looks like the magic happens when an AI model can access it all:

Then again, you are allowing the AI to access everything, so that should not be a decision made lightly.

@Virginia_Mowery Would be happy to connect and compare notes when I’ve done some experimentation.

Hi @Virginia_Mowery,

I want to help with a reply, but I’m not sure where to contribute because your request sounds very general to me, and it would help me to understand what specific needs you’re looking to optimize or problems you have to solve. Also, it seems as though these two ecosystems, Google or MS, are so different and encompassing, that a decision of which to use would be based on other general factors unrelated to Asana or even any specific, particular needs.

But, of course I may be wrong!

Thanks,

Larry

Thank you for the great response! I came back from vacation to find many emails, but this one stood out. It totally validates what we are doing in our org, with Google WS, and gives me some meat for that discussion internally.

Thanks Larry! I was trying to get a feel for who is better integrated with Asana, Google WS or MS. I had the impression, from the number of AI agents that MS has in place, that they might be further along the pathway, but I think that was the wrong impression.

I’m constantly thrilled and impressed with the integrations between Asana and Google WS. It has made my worklife so much better.
