This is the kind of thoughts that can turn you into the next Wrike, that everybody hates because it is too complicated 
but I understand where you are coming from, and there is a big chance Asana is discussing this very topic as we speak, just like they discuss all topics with a high request rate

YES to the toggle setting.
A 50/50 preference on a feature that would be instrumental for task management is not something to be dismissed.
Asana is about creating environments that work for unique teams. It’s shocking that this has been requested for the last 5 years by many, and yet has been dismissive - as you mention. @Forum-team would love to see the developers really hear out the community’s voice of this being a critical user experience and move this to a toggle option.
As a part of us moving to have subtasks inherit the project and custom fields of their parent task by default, this will be addressed and is already in development. This will be building off of the new project and custom field functionality UI from: Updated view of projects within tasks needs improving.
