Evaluate the cost of effort to automate a task

Every time I look at this image, my brain freezes. After a few attempt, I finally understood how to read it and it is useful!

Step 1: identify a task you want to automate, how long this task takes and how often

Step 2: find the right row-column in the table

Step 3: the number in the cell is the time you can spend automating it, if you want it to be worth it after 5 years

So for example:

  • a task taking one second per day: you can work 30 minutes on improving it and it will become worth it after five years.
  • a task taking 5 minutes a week, you can spend 21 hours on automating it

Once you have that number, you can use it to compare with the time it will actually take to automate. If you take the last example, spending only 4h automating (5 times less) will make it worth it after a year!

Did your brain freeze :brain:?
