Disable Expansion of Tasks when Dragging Other Tasks

The expansion of Tasks messes with the intuitive user experience, and disables the ability to properly drag and drop a Task in our preferred location. The expansion occurs when you’re actively dragging another Task over it.

Don’t forget to click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the Vote button at the top-left; that’s the quickest and most effective way to express your support for a request.

But note that the reason for this is that it facilitates dropping as a subtask (hence the expansion to open up the potential drop target). So I think a solution needs to address that as well.

Asana recently changed the functionality of the My Tasks view so clicking and dragging a parent task over another will automatically expand the second parent task to show its subtasks—but that is not always helpful, especially with the way my team uses Asana.

We often need to drag one task to another section, but there isn’t enough of a delay with the click-drag-hover-expand feature, so multiple tasks will expand while you’re dragging. We usually have a number of subtasks under each parent, so this multi-task expansion obscures the whole window with subtasks we don’t need to see. Then you may accidentally drop a parent task into the subtasks of another while you’re trying to drag the task where you initially intended—which usually results in even more parent tasks being expanded.

I’d like a feature to turn off that auto-expand function, if possible. Please consider—thank you!

Hi @Tyler_Clowe,

I’ve just tested this in my My Tasks list. For me the delay is enough to not expand any parent tasks by accident.

However, I don’t like the behaviour that tasks holding subtasks expand but don’t collapse automatically after you have passed them with your cursor.

For me, it introduces a large lag. I have hundreds of tasks in a single project, separated by sections. When I’m trying to reorder them manually (my weekly planning) the UX is very slow because it tries to understand if I’m dropping as a subtask or not. I almost never do this. I need to disable it, or Asana needs to make a hotkey to enable it on the fly (like “hold ALT to drop as subtask”.
