We use a project as an intake form. Once the form becomes a task and we are ready, we convert the task to a project. The columns become custom fields in the project information view. How do you get your Portfolio to then read those custom fields and populate the same columns in the portfolio view. I have the Portfolio using the exact same columns as the task that’s being converted to a project (using saved fields in our company library). I’m thinking this isn’t possible. If it’s not, it’s a waste of data and creates additional work to move the information into the Portfolio view.

Task View vs Portfolio view… the options are not going to portfolio view when converting the task to a project. I have to manually enter them again.

Any solution for this?

Hi @Rick_Esposito, welcome to the Asana Community Forum 👋

Unfortunately, this feature isn’t available at this time and I cannot think of any workarounds.

That said, I’m going to move this post to #productfeedback so folks in the community can upvote it and so our developers can get a better look at the needs of our members 🙂

This has been available for a while now. See:

> [@Converting task to project - field option info not transferring from task to project](https://forum.asana.com/t/converting-task-to-project-field-option-info-not-transferring-from-task-to-project/387232/3):

> Hi @Heather_Johnson2 , @lpb , this is actually possible! Perhaps it is a recent feature that was ‘quietly’ released. The key is for the custom fields to be added to the org’s library. Once a task with custom fields is converted to a project, the fields data will be added to the project’s fields, which you can see in the project actions dropdown \> Edit project details. To have these same fields show up in the Portfolio that the project is added to, simply add the same custom fields to the portf…

Thanks,

Larry

Where can I access the “project actions dropdown \> Edit project details”? I can’t find that setting anywhere.

Thanks,

Welcome, @Rachael_Watson,

When looking at a project in Asana, it’s here:

Larry,

That allows me to make sure the fields are the same, but it’s still not pulling the information from that field into the project.

For instance, before I click into the project, I can see the Wedding Date in the project overview (when I’m in the portfolio), but when I click into the project, it has the Wedding Date field, but it’s blank - it doesn’t pull the information into the project’s tasks, even though it’s the same field from my library.

Can you please help?

Thank you,
Becca

@Rachael_Watson,

If you have a custom field, say Wedding Date, and if all the following are true:

- The field’s checkbox is checked for “Add field to \<org’s\> field library”
- That field is added to the project so it appears on each task
- That field is added to the portfolio so it appears on each project
- The task to be converted to a project has a value in that field (some date)

… then when you convert that task to a project either with a template specifying adding to that portfolio, or with a rule specifying the portfolio, the date value will be copied into the portfolio’s Wedding Date field for that project.

That’s a one-time thing that only happens at the moment of transfer, not on an ongoing basis.

If that’s not working for you, your best bet is to [Try these troubleshooting steps](https://help.asana.com/s/article/troubleshooting-browser-and-connectivity-issues), then please create a support ticket: see [How to contact our Support Team](https://go.asana.com/supportteam).

Thanks,

Larry
