When clearing out values in a project filter, do not automatically remove the field from the filter list

When I facilitate standups, I share my screen and switch between different assignees in the filter dropdown. However, when I remove an assignee tag, the entire section gets cleared, forcing me to reopen the filter, click on “Assignee,” and search for the assignee again. Ideally, the input section should stay visible when a tag is removed so I can quickly select the next assignee without going through the whole process again.

@Olivia_Bowman1 - welcome to the forum! I’m not sure I understand what you’re describing. When you say:

Do you just mean you’re clicking the clicking the “x” next to the assignee’s name (tags are a specific, different field in Asana, so want to make sure I understand your language)?

If so, instead of removing the assignee, you can just click their name to bring up the dropdown to re-assign directly to someone else.

RE: your filtering question - it’s hard to answer this without knowing your specific filters and where you’re doing this (in a project, in my tasks, in a saved search, etc.), but I’m assuming you’re filtering for tasks with an assignee? If so, the first answer above should resolve that.

Yes, I apologize for the confusion—I’m referring to clicking the “X” next to the assignee’s name. Here’s my flow:

  1. Click the filter dropdown in the top right of the screen.
  2. Select “+Add filter.”
  3. Choose “Assignee” and add a person from the dropdown.
  4. Wait for that person to finish giving their update.
  5. Click the “X” next to the assignee’s name.
  6. Click “+Add filter” again to select the next person and repeat the process.

Clicking their name to bring up the dropdown to re-assign to someone else does not work, I just tried it.

@Olivia_Bowman1 - are you in a project? If so, what view (list, board, etc.)? Wherever you are, clicking on the current assignee should bring up the dropdown (in the below example, James Chen was the current assignee, which you can tell because that name is grayed out in the assignee field):

RE: your workflow, would grouping tasks by assignee help? It would basically simulate what you’re doing now but prevent you from having to re-filter every time:

Another option would be to save individual people filters as different views of the project (depending on volume/# of team members).

To clarify my use case: When I facilitate standups, I share my screen and toggle between different assignees in the filter dropdown as my team gives their daily updates. I use the filter in the top right to apply the assignee. However, when I remove an assignee, the entire section clears, requiring me to click “Add filter” again, select “Assignee,” and search for the next person each time. Ideally, the input section should stay visible when an assignee is removed so I can quickly select the next assignee without going through the whole process again.

Here is a screenshot of what happens after I select “X” on an Assignee.

@Olivia_Bowman1 - ah ok I see what you’re saying now. A couple ideas:

  • If you just start typing next to the first assignee, it’ll bring up the dropdown (i.e., if you are done with Joe and want to move on to Tom, type “t” and it will start filtering users). Maybe you could just add the next person and then remove the first
  • If you change your “Group” settings to group first by assignee and then by section, you would basically replicate your project list for each person in one view (you could just collapse/expand people’s group as you go)
  • Filter and save each person’s list as a new project view (not great if you have a very large team)

I’ve also retitled your OP for clarity and voted for it; make sure you use the purple vote button as well!

Thank you for the tips! However, even with this information, the most ideal solution would be to use the filter. Are you certain it’s not a bug? I recall that before Asana’s recent update the input dropdown would stay visible even after removing an assignee.

@Olivia_Bowman1,

I was going to recommend exactly what @Stephen_Li did here:

You say you prefer the filter, but the second option does use the filter; a different filter is pre-set in each tab view.

Thanks,

Larry
