If a project is in a portfolio, it seems it shouldn’thave to be re-added to timeline

Sorry for the confusion here. As it stands, if the Project is included in the Portfolio, you can automatically view it in the Timeline. You can learn more about it in this handy article: How to Get Started With Asana Portfolios | Product Guide • Asana Product Guide
Please note, that the project needs to have a Start Date and Due Date in order to be displayed in the Timeline.
