I am new to using Asana for the team and I am working on getting permissions set up to be easy to manage. I am using a team like an AD group to grant access to everyone at once. However people are still prompted to “Join” the project. Is this expected? I read a bit of some articles and noticed this line “Team members will be indirect members of the project through their team’s access. An indirect member is a user who is granted access to a project through a team.” What is the difference between an indirect member and a member of the project?

I think the only difference would be that in the Manage notifications dialog, you can only set the three notification checkboxes (three columns) for the team as a whole.
If you were to add individuals (either instead of or in addition to the team) to the project then they will get a row in the Manage notifications dialog to overcome this.
