Hello! I am having an issue with manually triggering a rule. While I can run the rule successfully on one task at a time, I want to run the rule on many tasks at a time. I understand that there is a limit of 50 tasks at once. However, I’m having a seemingly unique issue:
When I select two tasks, I see the option to run my rule, labelled “Sort Sections”.
However, if I select more than two tasks, such as 3 as I did here, suddenly there are “No manual triggers found”. Why does why rule disappear when I select more than two tasks and return once I select two or fewer tasks?
I have exited out of Asana, ended the background processes in Task Manager, reopened and tried again with the same result.
I’m using Asana app version: 2.8.0 (x64) on Windows 11, I believe on Asana Enterprise but I’m having a difficult time figuring that out. I personally am not paying to use Asana, but I work for an organization.

@Rhiannon_Williams1 I’m curious, if you create a duplicate of this same rule but in the duplicate, remove the “When task is added to this project” and leave the “Sort sections is run manually” does it still do the same thing?
Very interesting thought! I went ahead and tried it, unfortunately, had a worse result.
Now, I can only run the rule on a single task at a time, not even two. Additionally, the rule only appears as an option sometimes: regardless of whether I am right-clicking tasks from the “list” view, or clicking into the task, clicking the three dots in the top right, and accessing “Run a Rule” that way. It saying “No manual trigger found”, until occasionally, it appears as an option. There’s not clear rhyme or reason to me as to why it is sometimes an option.
I’m guessing this is an issue on my end, but very confusing.
Hi! It turns out the solution is you cannot run manual rules on “My Tasks”, at least, according to Asana’s AI chatbot. Only automated rules work in My Tasks. I wish the condition to manually trigger was not available when creating rules in My Tasks to avoid this confusion: something to consider in future updates!
So I don’t believe what the AI chatbot told you is true, you can run manual rules on My Tasks. But after testing, I was able to reproduce what you’re saying and for me, I wasn’t able to run it on any multi selected bundle of tasks that included a task that’s on a project that I’m not joined on. I would double check and see if that’s the case for you. It could also be if your multiple selections include any tasks where you are joined on the project but don’t have editing permissions.
I absolutely detest that the main option for customer support and troubleshooting is an AI chatbot, as I don’t know whether to believe any of the outputs it provides!!! It is less than useful, but actively confusing and makes the situation worse because of the doubt and confusion it causes. I tried to ask what the sources for the info was and read through it, but it did produce objectively incorrect information multiple times, which is the opposite of what you want when troubleshooting.
I took your advice though, and I am noticing now that it is tasks in specific projects. I am an “editor” in these projects, so not sure what the issue is for me. They’re all projects housed in a particular portfolio, but I am an editor in that portfolio as well… very curious.

No problem Rhiannon, definitely put in a support ticket when you can to make sure this is behaving as intended. In my opinion, permissions or being joined on a project shouldn’t be a factor in this case since all you’re doing is moving sections within your own My Tasks, not affecting anything in the task’s actual home project.
