Strange behavior related to Rules in the Inbox?

Hi all. I’m looking for insight on a strange behavior related to Rules in the Inbox.

A team member asked a colleague to perform a request and then mark the task complete when they’d completed the task. After the colleague marked the task complete, Asana seems to have created a new duplicate task assigned back to the original owner. That duplicate task then appears in the owner’s Inbox, making it appear that the task still needs to be completed.

Pic is attached.

The owner mentioned that they attempted to apply Rules to their Inbox to move completed tasks to the “Done” bucket (board view). Is it possible that was causing the issue?

We created a work-around by creating Rules in their other buckets (Do Today, Do Tomorrow, etc.) that would auto-move the tasks; that solution seemed to be more stable for the time being.

Any insight appreciated. Thank you!

Maybe the task is a recurring task? Does it show this icon by the date:

Thanks,

Larry

This was not a recurring task. :frowning:

You might learn more by clicking All activity in the bottom right corner of your screenshot an carefully inspecting the audit trail to see what happened to the task.

Or pausing rules to debug.

We did investigate the audit trails on the original task plus the duplicated one. Here’s one of the original tasks. There were Rules running after the task was completed. The result of those Rules yielded a duplicate task assigned to the original owner (which the owner attempted to assign again, not realizing it was a duplicate).

Also, it appears that this task in question is a subtask of a recurring parent task. (I was mistaken earlier.)

That’s what I was getting at before–that’s the cause.

Recurring tasks repeat themselves with description and subtasks intact.
