Following on from the issue that was raised here and closed, there is a usability problem with Status Report Templates and the requirement for dynamic report titles.
With existing reports, leaving the title blank when submitted sets the title to “<Project Name> - <Date>”.
However, when creating a Status Report Template, the title field is mandatory and requires static text to be entered. This prevents users from taking advantage of the dynamic title generation and creates an inconsistent experience between standard reports and template-based reports.
As a result, users who want the dynamic title behaviour must either counterintuitively delete the template title before submitting each report, or manually enter the desired title themselves increasing the likelihood of incorrect/inconsistent report naming.
The suggestion that was made in the other linked thread to just put in placeholder “delete this title” text is not really a useful solution - any organisation where a reasonable number of people are submitting reports there will eventually be a lot of reports submitted without the title changed, and due to inflexible editing permissions the only person ever able to correct these after submission would also be the one who missed it in the first place.
Suggested solution: Either allow for dynamic information (project name / date / etc.) in the status report title, or at the very least make the title optional within the template setup form with the same auto-fill name-date format as when a user goes to submit a non-templated status report.
