If I choose to sort a list by a custom field that’s a dropdown, it creates sections for each dropdown item that have associated tasks. This is perfect.
However, it always creates a section labeled “[no value set]”, even when every task has an associated label. Could you only show that section if there are items that are unlabeled?

@Marie, when you have a chance… Is there any chance to consider increasing the priority to fix, or perhaps recategorize this as a bug?

always appearing even when empty if you view any project grouped by any custom field, the same kind of thing also happens when you view any project grouped by Assignee. You see this at the bottom of the list:
It’s slightly better than the first example in that there’s no twisty, but still, ideally it should be hidden since it is a heading with no contents,
