Hi, I know that the option to sort projects alphabetically was added, but there is still not an easy way to sort them manually. I have to star every project that I want to be able to have in a static position (so I don’t have to hunt for it), and unstar every project that I complete to remove it from view. This has added unnecessary extra steps to something that worked perfectly before, and it is frustrating on a daily basis because we start and complete projects regularly! The original post was closed after the alphabetical sort was added, and a note of how to star projects was given as the only way to accommodate manual sorting. It seems that the many people on the previous thread that requested manual sorting have been ignored. It is very disappointing that Asana has closed the conversation without adding the functionality back.

Hi @Dana_Lewis, you make some good points. As you mentioned, using the Starred area is a good workaround, although it adds a step to star and unstar projects as they come and go.

Is it an option for you to use the projects list in the corresponding team, as shown below? When you manually reorder projects in this view, your selected order is retained both in that view and in the projects list that appears when you hover over the team in the sidebar.

Although not a direct solution, marking as such to highlight a key response.

Hi @Dana_Lewis , to add to @David_Nelson’s excellent suggestions, just note that reordering projects within a team will affect everyone else’s sorting order of those projects. This is unlike the Starred section where the order of projects is entirely a personal preference just for you.

</div>

Thank you @David_Nelson for your reply, but that suggestion still requires more effort than before the sidebar redesign. I never use the pop out project list in teams. To me the pop out is just not as helpful as the projects being in a static position in the sidebar where I can see them all without hovering or clicking on anything. Thank you @Richard_Sather for pointing out that this suggestion would also affect the order for everyone else in the team, which is not ideal. I still prefer the way the projects section worked before the sidebar redesign.

I’ve noticed in the last few months that I’m no longer able to drag and drop projects into custom orders in the left menu bar. I used to use this feature constantly to sort my projects by order of priority, so I’m really missing it. I’ve tried in Firefox (including in a private window), Chrome, and Edge. Was this feature removed?

Welcome, @Jessica_Myburgh,

Yes, a few months ago the sidebar was changed. You can read about it in other Forum posts or in the Asana help.

I’ve merged your post into an existing thread where you can click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the purple Vote button. And you can see some suggested workarounds in this thread too.

Thanks,

Larry

Hi all, is there any plan to reintroduce this capability? Although the suggestion offered are great, they are not as simple and elegant as being able to sort in the projects list directly. This is a significant UX regression from my pov. Please consider reintroducing this capability.

It appears this solution was also removed. I have the same issue with significant loss to productivity/workflow from key simple function being removed (sidebar manual sort). I did find this same offered solution on my own and have been using that, but now only seem to have the option to sort from a dropdown menu of sorting options. In searching for a solution I came upon this thread. Are there any alternatives other than staring projects? Thank you!

Hi Michael,

I am still starring and unstarring projects so that I can put them in the order I want them in. To my knowledge there is not another way.

I haven’t logged into my Asana in a few days – I feel like my projects were sorted manually before (as in, earlier this week) but now that is no longer an option. Am I mistaken? Has this feature been removed?

The only viable solution I currently see is to number projects which, and I cannot stress this enough, is maddening. I **hate** not having the ability to sort things manually.

To this effect if nothing is changed and I am simply getting back into workflow, I thank you for your time, and will use this forum to, in strongest possible request volume, the ability to sort everything manually everywhere always. As an option.

I appreciate this is not the only choice everyone will make, but it is the only choice I ever will make.

Hi @Kay_M_Scarbrough , @Sam_Sayer , welcome to the forum 👋

I appreciate your frustration! The inability to sort projects in a custom order in the Team page is also driving me nuts. The newly forced alphabetical sort also affects how Projects are sorted within the flyout menus of Teams in the sidebar too.

This is not exactly related to the topic of this thread, so if you want to add your voice and your vote, then best to do so in this thread:

> [@Bring back ability to manually / custom reorder projects via drag & drop on Teams Overview page](https://forum.asana.com/t/bring-back-ability-to-manually-custom-reorder-projects-via-drag-drop-on-teams-overview-page/813840):
>
> Hello, As of the latest update, Asana has lost the ability to reorder projects via drag/drop. Now only the predetermined sort options remain. Why lose this functionality? What does that get us? It’s made all of my team boards a mess and those that are less tech-savvy are having difficulty locating certain projects that are not date-driven. I submitted a ticket and was told this is not a bug, it’s a new feature. If so, that’s extremely disappointing, especially as I was looking to add a number …

The current workaround is to ‘Pin to top’ all projects which will enable the drag handles on the left so you can sort your projects in custom order, again. Obviously, not ideal if you have numerous projects!

Adding to the community feedback:
Asana, it is mission critical that your web developers create the ability to manually sort Project lists. It makes Asana feel rudimentary without this feature. Thank you, Elizabeth

Hi @Krista_Steed , welcome to the forum 👋

You can sort your projects in the sidebar by starring them. This will place them in the Starred section which you can manually sort as you please. You can also star Teams, Portfolios, Templates, Forms, Goals, People etc.

If you don’t find the Projects section useful, you can collapse it and drag it to the bottom of your sidebar and forget about it there.

I usually recommend using either the Starred OR the Projects section. When both are open together, I personally feel that they make the sidebar appear cluttered and overwhelming.

Using Asana once again for my business after a few years hiatus. Kind of a bad surprise to return to the platform only to find that projects and portfolios can no longer be manually sorted in the sidebar. Where are you, Asana? This seems like an easy gift to give back. I see this string was started over a year ago and still nothing? I don’t use this software anywhere near it’s full potential but this is one small thing that’s huge, and it certainly looks like I’m not the only one. I might have landed somewhere else had I realized this before I started building my kernel again.
