How can I sort my project by the Dependencies column? I have an Asana project which I am using as a Risk Register. Tasks are either a Risk or a Mitigation. I use the dependency feature to tie Mitigations to Risks, so if I select a particular Risk, I can see the Mitigations against that Risk under Dependencies (Blocked By). I have unhid the Asana field “Dependencies” and I would like to sort by this field (column) by the quantity of dependencies, but this field will not sort. Is there another way to sort or show which Risks have the least/most mitigations? Thank you for your help.
I’m afraid this isn’t possible in Asana. I’ve moved this thread to where you can click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the purple Vote button.
Thanks,

I am wanting to sort tasks for a particular project by dependencies. This is a large project with many tasks and many dependencies. Some tasks are ‘Blocking’ multiple tasks, and some tasks are ‘Blocked By’ multiple tasks. So, to be specific, I am trying to find out which tasks are ‘Blocking’ the highest quantity of other tasks and which tasks are ‘Blocked By’ the highest quantity of other tasks. Thank you in advance for any help or advice you can provide.
Hey Steve, Have you tried using the Timeline in your project? In it you can get an overview with what you are looking for.
Hi Barbara, thank you for your reply and the suggestion. Currently all the tasks have not been scheduled (due dates have not been entered) as this is early on. So, the Timeline view isn’t able to show me what I need. It might be helpful to know the use-case. We are trying out Asana as a Risk Register, each task is either a Risk or a Mitigation (custom field to identify). We made each Mitigation a dependency for the associated Risk. Some Risks have multiple Mitigations, and some Mitigations are aimed at multiple Risks. I’m looking to rank the Mitigations by how many risks they are addressing, and the Risks by how many Mitigations they have assigned. Maybe that adds more clarity? I appreciate any input.
I’ve merged this thread into a newer, more detailed thread where you can click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the purple Vote button.
Thanks,
Larry
It would be nice if sort for groupings could sort numeric custom fields by the SUM or AVG values. This could help you if you had a rule to add a 1 for each dependency and then did a SUM, but alas, no such sort option currently.
This feature would be amazing, as we almost always use List as our default. It would save time not having to manually rearrange tasks that are due on the same day based on dependency. Otherwise, it can be confusing to see them in the wrong order.
