When you close the left sidebar, it should reveal when you hover over the hamburger menu. Then disappear again when you have hovered off the sidebar.
Right now, a click is required and then to close again, a click on the X.
When I am at the office with an external monitor, space is never an issue. But when I am mobile on my laptop, I am constantly opening and closing that sidebar.
