The best workaround I found was still to have a custom field “Future assignee” in the template, don’t assign tasks, and only do once you use the template…

Something this basic should not need nor have a ‘workaround’ but a solution after 2 years. This is a huge oversight on Asana’s part. Almost Apple level reluctance to fix the issue.
